Baptism has nothing to do with salvation. Renouncing your faith does not send you to hell either. Once you accept Christ then you become a child of God. You can renounce your earthly father but you are still his child. It is the same way with God. Salvation is not something you do or earn it is a free gift that you merely have to accept.

Baptism is one of the cornerstones of denominational diferentiations in Protestant churches. Pretty fascinating at how many interpretations there are and that's not even getting into the dunked vs sprinkled debate.

Very true! Which is too bad.
I once heard a pastor say (in a classroom setting) you HAD To be baptized as an adult...then someone said "well what if I die, and I've accepted Christ but I haven't been baptized" And he replied "then you go to heaven as a disobident Christian" And I said "well that's okay then because I'm already going as that anyway"
People get TOO hung up on it.

Agreed, I think every person who accepts Christ should be baptized if possible but it is not a requirement for going to heaven.

This is why I call it a symbolic gesture. It is an open proclamation that you have invited Christ into your heart. It isn't required for salvation, but it is a logical step to take if you've accepted Christ. I didn't say it was a ritual.....I say it's a symbolic gesture of proclamation. I believe we are saying the same thing here, using different words. Bottom line; You don't have to be baptized to be saved, but if you accept Jesus as the savior, you should want to be baptized as a sign of grace.

I've heard heated discussions on that too. It was a big deal when my childhood church put in a baptismal pool. The old folks didn't think it was a real baptism and put folks at risk of eternal damnation. I know that Liberty Hill Primitive Baptist still dunks in the creek.

Actually I believe in both infant and adult baptism. I believe it is something God does, not something we do.
But I think there is too much worrying and arguing about it.
