Who do you think we should target to be Jake's backup/ competition?

Dante Culpepper - always a chance he could regain his form
Chad Pennington - would be best in a WCO but has some intangibles
Joey Harrington - I would pass
Byron Leftwich - might be decent if we could keep him upright.
Rex Grossman - has a big arm and potential, needs a solid QB coach....
Josh McCown - decent backup, nothing more
Quinn Gray - I do not know much about him
Sage Rosenfeld - not sure if we could get him from the Texans but he has played well the last couple of weeks

I would lean towards Culpepper. He has playoff experience and had played at a high level in the past. Steve Smith is as good as Randy Moss so he might revitalize Culpepper.

    Hopefully someone good.

Looked better than I thought he would in oakland but will be looking for the chance to start.

Maybe, I think he'll want to start also.

    We won't be able to.

Carr was considered the top backup on the market, so you have to realize that the performance of the player will depend on our situation. In this case, Carr was undermined by the lack of secondary options and a tendency to turtle under pressure. That lack of protection rules out Culpepper, Harrington, Leftwich, Grossman, and possibly Pennington.

The quality of QB's in the league has gone to shit in the last 10 years. No body wants to take the time to develop a guy anymore becuase of the amount of money they are paying them. There are 2-3 (usually Manning/Brady/One year Wonder) QB's every year who play at an elite level, then maybe 4-5 (varies) more who are solid and the rest range from to pedestrian to 100% uck.

I was really excited when the Panthers got Carr. It made all the sense in the world and I thought he would push Jake for the starting job. That of course has not happened but the Panthers have invested a lot of money in Carr. Right now he has no confidence and the team appears to have none in him. It would seem almost certain that they try to get a bargain in the off season with a back up qb. The pickings are damned slim.

Carr has lost his confidence. His problems are beyond the fact that the supporting cast is not great. Sometimes the guy considered the best available is a bust.

I think Culpepper could do OK for us. If he ever regains his mobility he will probably be very good again. Who knows if he ever will though. In any event with both our tackles set to be free agents we should be overhauling our OL and hopefully improving protection.
