I wanted to post this again because I think it's vitally important in terms of evaluating Hurney:

In MMQB, Peter King listed current projected cap room in 2008 for every NFL team. Only three teams figure to have less cap space than we will (which could change somewhat based on releases and restructuring), but the most damning thing of all is that we have $6.05 million in cap space even though we only have 35 players under contract for '08. Only Arizona had fewer with 34 (but they have $30.27 mil), and most have 45+ signed for next season.

nothing there really. Parcells was NYJ when Fox was NYG, which is where the Weis connection comes in. Fox and Weis knew each other and became good friends from working adjacent. I doubt there was anything of worth to happen between an opposing DC and a head coach. I doubt Parcells has anything against Fox, and could work with him, but to be most successful, Parcells has always specifically cleaned house and started over whenever possible, so as a GM, I'd expect a completely different team in up to 2 years.

I think we determined that over $13 mil was Julius Peppers. Solving that one way or the other takes care of that problem.

Per Pastabelly the salary cap is only going up to 116 million for next year, a 7 million increase, so King may have already factored that into his numbers.

As for Peppers and that 13 million cap number, a Freeney type deal cuts that by a little more than half. That leaves us roughly 13-13.5 million to work with. Throw in a deal for Gross and the rookie cap (Houston's was 3.814 for 7 picks, ours for 6 picks should be a similar number after this year's increase is thrown in) and we're probably back to square one or close to it. Still not a lot of maneuvering room considering we'll have to sign another 11 guys after Gross and the 6 draft picks.

I don't know where you're getting that $13 million. Peppers' base for '08 is only $6.5 million, which is less than a million over what he was this year. I'd be pretty shocked if he had $7 million additionally in roster and prorated signing bonus money. So no, that's not an excuse. Hurney is just god awful at his job.

Fair enough, but I'd like to see some numbers on that. I trust the NFLPA's website more than I do Gantt, who has incorrectly reported contract information numerous times.

At this moment the thought of the Panthers doing that type of deal with Peppers is pretty scary. I'm not sure what his problem is this season but I just can't see throwing that kind of cash at him if this is the level of production he's going to produce. 16 mill on the cap next season isn't a good position to be in either.

the Freeney deal isn't what screwed up the market for defensive linemen, the deal Detroit gave Redding is what did that.
