partially because most people don't know any other options.

FWIW, I have a hard time believing that Parcells wouldn't end up meddling somewhat. Either he hires one of his guys (as to who, I wouldn't know - his up and coming guys have gone ahead and gone) or he hires a guy he can boss around.

OTOH, if he wanted to both, I'm all for that. Not that I"m not, for GM, but it'd be a bigger concern of whether he'd have his hands too deep in.

Belicheck certainly did not want to be a head coach under a Parcells GM.

VP, player personnel. Which is the same role I'd like to have for our guy to add. Technically, there's a chasm between Hurney/Fox and Mark Richardson - there's no vp to take care of the actual football team with direct day to day authority. IMO, especially with JR's age, there's a concern of who would take care of the non-ownership type thing, if/when he 'gets his statue' for lack of a better term.

I did mention that Koncz was getting a big ride as if he'd not done wrong, but people were criticizing Gregory after one draft (that was, IMO, still a good one). Koncz not only does a lot of the work on scouting for pro personnel, but he heads up advanced scouting during the year, too.

In abscence of a full GM, the individual roles become more important. Which is why we were better in the situation of having Bushofsky, a default GM type, over the guy who'd do better talking to the press and coordinating the individual roles, Hurney. That way there's less in the coaches' laps, various guys have their opinions but there's one guy to say yes/no. There's no less teamwork, just that the guy who goes and gets what Fox says his guys need? That guy has the ability to determine the best way to go get that.

I've said for years now, if Hurney does it all as he's doing, and we have a guy who has the power to make those moves, we're in better shape.

fair point. And that worked out. You could say the Pats org., right or wrong, was the better organization, given that they've had Groh, Edwards, and now Mangini since then, but Bellichick has won 3 rings and is on the way to 4. At the time, it seemed pretty stupid, but yeah, it's worked out.

But, also Nelson, Seidman, Colbert, LeFors, Fasini, Ellison, Mathis, Shelton, Butler, Rashard Anderson. Except for Lefors and Fasani those are day 1 guys. Naturally we can't blame all of these guys exclusively on Softli just as we can't credit the ones you listed only to him.
Fwiw, I am gonna speculate we may have to some unknown degree been using evaluations done on Carr when scouting him out of college, when Softli was in charge. In any case it didn't work out, there's not much good that can be said about anyone's role in that decision, in hindsight.

I got no big problem with the '07 draft right now, as I never expected Kalil or Jarrett to be depended on to do much this year. Well, no S, and we whiffed on Robinson. He hasn't shown anything that makes me believe in him whereas Smitty showed explosiveness right away.

none direct, but Parcells and Weis have strong ties, and Fox and Weis have ties. Just don't know the hypotenuse.

right...there have been a ton of "wowsers" in Softli's drafts, but there have been some gems too.

There are changes that need to be made...I just don't really know the starting point.

Smarter people than I don't either but really we haven't drafted an offensive playmaker that I can think of since Smitty. I'd go as far as saying Foster is probably the highlight so far. Out of six drafts Fox has had, that's not good enough (probably should say five drafts and give the last one some time). I don't indict Fox totally for it, since there has been a change made.

And I personally would rather have big guys up front on OL so we could get some push.
