SAUERBRUN GETS BUSTED (PFT)

It's time to re-set the "days without an arrest" meter. Eventually, the Denver Broncos might have to get one of their own.

Per media reports, Broncos punter Todd Sauerbrun was arrested for simple assault on Saturday.

Officially, Sauerbrun was "cited" for assault, and taken to a detox facility.

A cab driver allegedly claims that Sauerbrun hit him in the head after the driver ordered Sauerbrun to get out of the car.

If/when Sauerbrun is convicted or pleads guilty (or no contest) to the charge, he will be subject to discipline under the Personal Conduct Policy.

Sauerbrun spent a portion of the 2006 season with the Patriots, after serving a four-game suspension for violation of the policy on steroids and related substances and then being cut by the Broncos. (He tested positive for ephedra.) The Pats attempted to obtain a right of first refusal, and then attempted to invoke it after Sauerbrun signed an offer sheet with the Broncos. A grievance resulted in a scuttling of the right of first refusal based on a technicality.

But for Sauerbrun's successful avoidance of the Patriots contract, the three Turd Watch points that will be added to Denver's total would have been the first three points to the Patriots for the year.

Assuming, of course, that the Pats wouldn't have been able to keep Sauerbrun out of trouble. Based on New England's track record with players having trouble in their past, there's a good chance that Sauerbrun would have stayed on the right side of the law.

 

Well, you have to give 'Brun SOME credit. At least he took a cab instead of driving drunk. That's a change from when he was here.

 

Yeah, it's obvious that he couldn't have possibly done anything wrong if he'd just been a Patriot.

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) - Broncos punter Todd Sauerbrun proclaimed his innocence Wednesday and expressed frustration over an assault charge stemming from an altercation with a taxi driver outside a restaurant last weekend.

"It's a false allegation and the truth will come out," Sauerbrun said. "It's a completely overblown issue."
Sauerbrun said he's flustered because this latest run-in paints him in a bad light with the public and the league — which suspended him last year — and might also impact his future in Denver, where coach Mike Shanahan gave him a second chance this season after he fell out of favor and was released last season.

Denver police said Sauerbrun was cited for simple assault early Saturday. Witnesses said he struck a cab driver who kicked him out of his taxi for belligerent behavior.

"I was trying to do the responsible thing" in taking a cab after having some drinks at dinner, said Sauerbrun, who was taken to a detox facility but not arrested. "I didn't have my license on me. I was taking a cab everywhere. I can't drive without my license."

Sauerbrun said he's confident he'll be exonerated but that the case nevertheless weighs heavily on him because of the possible ramifications, including league discipline and the public perception he's a bad apple.

"Yeah, it does bother me. Well, the (biggest) thing that bothers me is what you guys are writing. Well, not you and you," he told two reporters from The Associated Press and the Colorado Springs Gazette. "But you know, everything that's being written, it's hurtful. It really is."

Wednesday marked the first time Sauerbrun had been in the locker room during reporters' access time since his arrest.

Sauerbrun said he's hopeful that Shanahan will support him just as he defended running back Travis Henry, who recently won his appeal of a one-year suspension for a failed drug test. Shanahan even got fined $25,000 by commissioner Roger Goodell for his comments about the case.

Shanahan said Sauerbrun will pay the price if found guilty but should be afforded due process before any speculation is made about his future in Denver.

A free agent after this season, Sauerbrun said he trusts he'll clear his name and won't get a ticket out of town again.

He was suspended for the first month of last season after using a banned dietary supplement. Upon his reinstatement, the Broncos and Sauerbrun split ways and he signed with New England. After winning his release from the Patriots, Sauerbrun returned to Denver in April and signed a one-year, $1.4 million contract.

He pledged to repay Shanahan for giving him another chance, much as Denver's coach did in 2005 after Carolina gave up on him following a series of on- and off-field distractions, including a drunken driving arrest.

DENVER -- The Denver Broncos released beleaguered punter Todd Sauerbrun on Tuesday, The Associated Press has learned.

The move was confirmed by a person familiar with the decision who spoke on condition of anonymity because the announcement hadn't been made.

The Broncos declined comment but were expected to announce a transaction later in the afternoon. Sauerbrun is the only punter on the Broncos' roster.

Sauerbrun faces legal trouble stemming from an incident outside a restaurant in early December. He's scheduled to appear in court Jan. 15 on an assault charge.

The story was first reported on the Web sites of the Denver Post and the Rocky Mountain News.

It is the second time Sauerbrun has been cut by the Broncos.

He was suspended for the first month of last season after using a banned dietary supplement. Upon his reinstatement, the Broncos and Sauerbrun went their separate ways and he signed with the New England Patriots.

The 38-year-old Sauerbrun returned to Denver on a one-year, $1.4 million contract after being granted his release from the Patriots last spring.

Sauerbrun was averaging 46.8 yards a punt, with a net average of 36.1.

However, the Broncos have struggled on special teams. Denver gave up a 75-yard punt return to Chicago's Devin Hester and then Sauerbrun had another kick blocked in Denver's 37-34 loss to the Bears in overtime.

Sauerbrun lost his starting spot to Paul Ernster last season while serving his suspension. He had used ephedra in an attempt to lose weight and gain extra energy for his workouts.
