If Pitt had been in the playoffs then they would have been the #15 team in the nation, playing #2 WVU. If they beat them then, then yes, they would move on, and many would say they are better. #15 beats #2 and #2 is knocked out. Instead, a team ranked #80 by cbs has beaten the #2 and kept them out of a title shot.

In the playoff system, the #2 team would still have a shot at a national title, for they are a better team than the #80, but stumbled while their starting qb was on the sidelines. The only thinkg that would happen to WVU is that they would have lost position in the tournament and been forced to play a tougher opponent in the first round. Your system has been the cause of a #2 team being knocked out by a #80.

In the BCS, what matters is how many times you lose, and that was West Virginia's second loss out of a fairly weak schedule. A playoff format says that the #80 team is supposedly better than the #2 team because whoever wins one game is considered the better team by playoff logic.

And no, Hawaii doesn't deserve a shot. Their schedule is ranked the weakest of any team in the entire nation, and they just struggled to beat a Washington team that finished dead last in the Pac-10.
