This article about Hurney on his panthers.com bio sheds some light on his responsibilities, which do not describe him as a scout.

    http://www.panthers.com/Team/StaffBio.aspx?id=2154

    From the bio:

"It is clear that teams cannot separate the salary cap from football personnel decisions, and Marty has a great understanding of how the two areas interact," said team president Mark Richardson. "He is responsible for seeing that the coaching, personnel and salary cap areas work together in a concerted effort."

So it kinda seems like he's an overseer, facilitator, and a liason between coaching, scouting, and financial management.

My point is that Hurney doesn't amke the draft picks or choose who to go after in FA. What it sounds like he does is determine the fiscal / personnel ramifications of any player aquisition.

As that goes, it MAY ( THIS IS PURE SPECULATION ) have been Hurney who indicated that we can't keep both Morgan and Spoon, but I'd speculate that he was not the one who made the choice - that was prolly Fox.

This is total speculation, but that's that.

Yep. But people are blaming him for bad drafts, etc. I don't think that's on him any more than it's on JR.

Doesn't anybody think we should give Moore a shot and let him play QB and Vinny back HIM up instead of putting him in for the last play of the game?? I think he might produce more offense that Vinnie. We don't know yet, because we haven't tried playing him a whole game. What can it hurt??

I'm hoping Carr will get hit by a truck so he doesn't come back at all.

I think we should definitely let Matt Moore start and play for the rest of the season. We got to be realistic we are not going to make the playoff.no matter who start at QB Vinny Carr or Moore. Now we know that Vinny will retire at the end of the season and as far as Carr go as long Collin don't become our next head coach then Carr will be cut in off season. In that case we must think about the future and let Matt Moore play and let him develop they will be some growing pains. But the season already done we have we have nothing to lose and everything to gain
