For wifey bday. She will read email, browse the web, mess with photo and maybe video.

I prefer to stay under $700.

    Is this possible?

Buy one from Wal-Mart for less than $400, double the memory, wipe it and reinstall the OS from the disks when you get home (without all the unnecessary apps that come pre-installed), set her up with a USER account for daily usage, and a separate admin account for system changes, turn ON automatic updates for the OS, and use Firefox rather than IE.

At least 4 trouble-free years guaranteed.

Do brands not really mean shit anymore? I've had a Toshiba laptop...think I've had a Compaq...

Never had problems. I hear people preaching about Gateway, Dell, etc...

Seriously, just buy a cheap ass laptop? Can it DO everything? Picture editing (family photo stuff...nothing elaborate), games, internet, email...

Gaming is the only common application that can tax modern PC's. If you have enough memory, every modern machine rips up the basics.

Most laptops are made in Taiwan by just one or two companies. Clevo? Cleo? is one of them. Then they are sold as HP, Compaq, etc. It's pretty much all the same.

I'd stay away from Acer because of some shortcuts they take, and I'd try to get a cheap Core2 Duo machine w/ lots of memory, cause it'll stay relevent for a long time.

    I presume you prefer XP?

Do you have a specific unit in mind? I found no sub $400 laptops, and the sub $500 units run a 'CM7' processor, whatever that is.

Everything else comes close in price to the above linked Dell.

    preesh.
