What are your thoughts on Appalachian State football and will they repeat as National Champions?

I'd be suprised this year. The loss to Wofford was a shocker. The loss to Ga. Southern may have been a season killer. They might not even win the conference, which is looking like Wofford or Elon right now (no way I would've expected to say that this summer). It's not a given that they even make the playoffs. If they end the season in the top ten in the polls, then they likely will get an at-large seat. Or if Elon and Wofford both lose at least two more games apiece and App St. wins out then App St. gets the conference title. But there's a plausible chance, especially with unexpectedly tough Citadel still on your schedule, that App. St. might be sitting at home watching the playoffs on TV a month from now.

It really depends on how things work out throughout the rest of I-AA, which I haven't really paid attention to this year. Some years, a team with two I-AA losses gets in (other than as a conference champion), but not always.

There is no way that App 3peats with the defense playing at their current level. Every team is putting up big numbers and a lot of points against them. If they have a quick fix, they better do it now.

I agree! Especially their rush defense, it is awful! If they have any hope of 3-peating it has to start with the rush defense in my opinion!

Just looked briefly over the other I-AA conferences this year. No one is really dominating anything, anything is possible this year. Hell, Elon or Wofford could become national champs. Ridiculous.

    Young = Inconsistent

The Apps are just so young at the front seven. With that brings inconsistent play. They are getting better each game I think. If they can come together as a unit, and play four consistent quarters, they can 3- Peat. The injury to Tim Washington really hurts and Tharrington is playing on heart alone every game. I would be surprised, but not totally shocked if they are not back in Chattanooga in Dec.

Listening to the ASU/Citadel game today, if it ends up 3 or 4 teams in the SoCon tied with 2 losses, ASU is a lock for the playoffs, but I don't know if they can 3peat. They can definitely outscore anybody, but they don't play well being behind. I think they got overconfident after the Michigan win. They should have beaten Wofford, and if they win out, they should have the confidence plus the humility to be disciplined enough to win some playoff games if they get in.

Wow, the race for the So Con championship just got jumbled today. Ga Southern upset Wofford, Furman upset Elon, and App St handled the Citadel.

Right now the top conference standings are:

    Georgia Southern 4-2
    Wofford 4-2
    Elon 4-2
    App St 3-2

    Regarding tie breakers:
App St lost to Wofford and Ga Southern
Wofford lost to Elon and Ga Southern
Elon lost to Furman and App St
Ga Southern lost to Elon and Chatt

    Remaining conference games:
    11/10
    Ga Southern at Furman
    Elon at the Citadel
    Wofford at Chattanooga
    App State at Western Carolina

    11/17
    App State at Chattanooga

Ga Southern and Elon have the toughest challenges left, though both should win next week. We could conceivably have a 4-way tie in two weeks. Georgia Southern has the hottest streak going have beaten App State, The Citadel, and Wofford back to back the past three games. They may be the team, if they beat Furman (likely) and Elon loses to The Citadel (very possible).

    Heh. Check this scenario out:

    11/10:
    Furman beats Ga Southern
    The Citadel beats Elon
    Chattanooga beats Wofford
    App State beats W. Carolina

    11/17:
    Chattanooga beats App State

If all of that happened, the following teams would be tied for the championship at 4-3
    Wofford
    Ga Southern
    Elon
    App State
    The Citeadel
    Furman
    Chattanooga

Folks, that's every team in the conference except for Western Carolina. ROFL.

    Apps

Surfer, I live in Boone and I'm a App fan, but ASU should NOT have beaten Wofford. I dont know if you saw that game or not, but Wofford dominated us in every aspect of the game.....including coaching on that day. That won't happen often to Coach Moore and his staff. If ASU plays Wofford again this year, App will win the next game. I also think that even if ASU has another slip up this year, and were to finish 8-3 they are still in. The Michigan win coupled with the strength of the Socon, and ASU being a two time defending Champ will put them in the field. It really helps since Michigan has gone on a roll and are vying for the Big10 Championship.

I didn't mean they should have beaten them that game, I just meant they out-talent Wofford and weren't prepared, as you said, outcoached. I think they were overconfident.
