I'm just taking a State alum's word but he said O'Brien has got some good things going with recruiting.

I assume that he'll do better than he did at BC simply because of the facilities and weather, but he'll never be in Davis' league and I don't think many State fans expect him to be. He's more the type of guy who coaches up the players he gets rather than one who brings in superior talent. I doubt that they'll ever get someone of Marvin Austin's quality.

I don't want to get on a basketball theme here in the football forum, but I've read numerous articles about NC State probably being the 2nd best team in the ACC THIS year behind UNC. I also know first hand of some pretty damn good players that will be wearing the red and white this year...Brandon Costner, JJ Hickson, Tracy Smith, Courtney Fells, Gavin Grant (ball handling excluded!:)) Those top two can match up with ANYONE in the ACC. As for State's success this season, it all hinges on the PG which looked pretty good in an exhibition last night in Degand who's a speedster who looks to run up and down the court. With backups like Johnson and Gonzalez there is depth, so yes, I do believe State will finish at worst 2nd in the ACC and may give the "boys" in powder blue a run for the championship. Laugh while you can, because the longer Sid's at State the more powerful the program will be.

As for Butch, I agree with Collin. Neither school is too scared of the other, right now. And neither should be. Both teams have blown monkey ass for the past few years and neither has been a powerhouse this season.

As for recruiting, yes, Davis landed Marvin "I've got huge tits" Austin, and that's fine. UNC can win the recruiting battles for all I care. It still hasn't made them a better team? And Amato used to bring in those type players and it didn't do anything for us, so who really cares how high ranked a player was out of high school? I like what I see out of O'Brien on the field and I like the players he has orally committed right now. If those guys sign, I look for our football program to continually get better. As for UNC, I've never been too worried about Butch as an on-field coach, so I hope he REALLY brings in some talent for them to get better b/c they aren't getting the coaching when they get there. Hell, it took Larry Coker to coach Miami to a national championship with Davis' players. When Davis was there they were playing in the Micron PC Bowl against who else...NC State. (And yes, they whipped our ass).

Anyway, it won't matter in a few weeks...Butch goes to Arkansas, Paul Johnson comes back home to NC and gives us State fans something to worry about as far as coaching.

I'd agree there's a very good chance of this.

    Agreed

I won't say at worst, but I'll agreed they've got enough potential to at least compete for the ACC championship.

I DO think the State fans are concerned about Butch's recruiting. After Austin this year they've got the #1 RB in the nation looking at them, and the #1 LB in the nation looking at them, just to name 2. A few years ago that talent wouldn't be there. They've also been competitive with a relatively young team and no solid running back.

Um its the first year for those recruits visit them in 2-3 years.

Davis is a better coach than Amato for starters. He can do more with the talent.

Keep hoping. Cause it ain't happening.

They're the most popular sleeper, certainly, but I think people are getting ahead of themselves. Yes, they made a nice tournament run and added a dynamite player in Hickson, but they were still only 5-11 in ACC play last season. Good post play should make them competitive in most games, but I think the guards will still be too inconsistent for a top finish. I see them ending up around 4th in the league and making another strong run in the tournament.
At worst? You're setting yourself up to be disappointed.
Amato never brought in the 3rd ranked recruit in the nation, and Davis is obviously a much better coach than Amato ever was. It doesn't guarantee Carolina anything, but it obviously gives them more potential.
That is absurd. People forget where Miami was when he got there. He's the one who returned them to prominence and recreated that program. Plus the number of guys he put into the NFL speaks for itself. Yes, he brought in talent, but he also made those guys into football players while they were there. Tom O'Brien is a good coach, but never reached those heights.
Dude, come on. Paul Johnson was a popular candidate for State but would never be a candidate at Carolina.

BC's rank is obviously a mirage, and I'm not aware of anyone on that team who was a top recruit coming out of high school. Matt Ryan is getting hyped now and should go fairly high in the NFL draft, but I don't think all that much of him either.
    Guffaw.

Who else do you think Carolina has even a remote shot at hiring?! Another name I would think is a possibility is promoting Blake to HC. Other than that, Paul Johnson is the best UNC could get...and I don't think he's bad. He wins with inferior (1, 2, and 3 * guys) talent. That's pretty good in my book.

As for the recruits, yeah, we'll see how well Butch does (if he stays at Carolina). I'm sure the program will get better, the only way to get worse is to lose to Duke and State each year. BUT, I don't see them being an 8 or 9 win team anytime in the next 5-7 years. Amato did bring in the number one DT in the U.S. (Pressley), but I don't remember where he was ranked overall, but that's pretty comparable to Austin. As we've seen he's been a good player, but not great. He also had a number one overall pick in Mario Williams, and about 5 first rounders to go along with that. So, I'd say Amato brought in some pretty talented guys. However, he didn't win with them. So predicting future success on the star rankings of high school players isn't always accurate. So, I don't forsee Carolina becoming a huge success just due to landing a few standout recruits.

Lastly, I'm going against all codes of the fan rivalry rules when I say this...I just really hope that UNC and State can join Wake at the top of the conference. That makes for better rivalries and more pride for us North Carolinians. I actually pull for Carolina when they play those freakin' Florida teams. I'd just like to see both of them finish last each season.

Yeah, I hate to say it but I pull for State against FSU most years. I feel dirty.

Great, another typically delusional State fan. Look man, no matter how much it bothers you, State and Carolina are not in the same class. Even Spurrier praised the UNC job and said that if it had been open at that time, he might have been in Chapel Hill rather than Columbia. It's simply a much more attractive area than Raleigh, and a much more attractive school than N.C. State.
I hope that you're just saying this to be annoying and aren't that out of touch with reality.
Pressley was not in the top ten, so no, he wasn't quite up to Austin's level. And the fact that you're downplaying Austin because he isn't all-ACC as a freshman is hilarious. In any case, Butch Davis is a better recruiter than Amato ever was, as well as a much, much better coach.
Weird. I despise State more than any school in the country (I'm more of a football fan than basketball, so I hate State much more than Duke). Generally the only time I pull for them is if it's against a non-ACC school that I despise nearly as much.
