New York spent on pitching, although in hindsight I guess you can say they were the wrong pitchers. I was also going to quibble about the truism, but I went back and looked at recent champions. Only St. Louis, Florida, and the 2000 Yanks finished outside the top three in league ERA over the last decade.

 

Wrong. Scoring more runs than your opponents wins championships.

 

If a team has an ERA of 4(which is a pretty good number). The offense as a whole hits, lets say .285 for the year. That means the pitching staff is giving up 4 runs per game but the offense can only score 2 or 3 runs per game. So you have to have a balance of both offense and defense with a pitching staff that keep teams to 2 or 3 runs per game.

I agree a team needs to have a good pitching staff first and foremost, but to say pitching wins championships is only a partly true statement. Good pitching, hitting, and defense wins championships.

 

Torre calling his offer an insult to the media sure shows some ego on his part.
5 million still put him in the overpaid class and the one year part was a given considering what they`ve done in the playoffs. Doesn`t Torre have a losing managerial record before coming to the Yanks?

Try not to be a hardass about it. You can have the greatest hitting lineup of all-time and still not win a game if your pitching isn't worth a shit. And it hasn't been for the Yankees the last few years.

 

I'm not being a hardass, just having some fun. I agree with you that a team will go as far as their pitching will take them. But in order to win a WS, a team must have pitching, hitting, and defense. Not having one or the other will cost you. The Mets showed that the best this year, they lost all three at the end and now one of the best teams of the year is sitting at home.
