It's amazing to me that so few sheeple realize the significance of the college system. If we had a playoff, getting upset wouldn't really mean much at all. 9 out of every 10 people who idiotically clamor for a playoff haven't considered what that would mean. They're just perpetually ignorant loudmouths who can't actually be bothered to think about issues or their ramifications, but must instead drunkenly chant the same mindless mantras like twenty-first century cavemen.

    PLAYOFF!!! PASSION!!! PLAYOFF!!!

Just because there are "issues" and "ramifications" (which there undoubtedly are) doesn't mean a playoff system wouldn't be better.

I mean, every other sports entity out there manages to get around those "issues" and "ramifications".

No, but a rational evaluation of the situation shows that relatively little would be "fixed" by a playoff and quite a bit would be lost. Take, for example, college basketball. Aside from rivalry games and injuries, no one much cares about the regular season because it's largely irrelevant. In college football you have to bite your nails even when playing Appalachian or Stanford. Or look at the fact that only once in the last sixty years have the #1 and #2 teams actually faced off for the national championship. While I'll certainly grant that basketball rankings are an imperfect science, you can't tell me that they didn't get it right more than once in sixty years, which means that the best teams do not play each other for the title. The NCAA tournament is a great for marketing and entertainment, but it's extremely flawed when it comes to determining the best team in the country.

To very quickly and succinctly sum up my objections to a college football playoff system:
    • A playoff would devalue the regular season
    • There would still be controversy about who gets in
    • You could end up with a 2 or 3 loss team as the champ because they got hot
    • Match-ups are critical in football, hence NCSU so frequently beating FSU
    • Every team except one ends the season with a loss (think about Boise State beating OU, then getting waxed the next week)
Really, the only legitimate playoff system in college football would be one that scrapped the regular season altogether and was simply a four or five month long World Cup-style tournament with conference groupings and round-robin advancement.

It amazes me how many sheeple also fail to realize that a playoff system in college football would generate more money, not less. That's not what it's about.

so, why are there regular-season sellouts in any arena? seems like lots of people care.

rankings are imperfect -- the pollsters do not watch every game played by every team.

should we subjectively rank nba teams? mlb teams? nfl teams? tennis players?

Take the SEC champ and the Pac-10 champ and let them play no matter what the record. They will deserve to be #1 and #2.

Some go because they always have (UNC, Duke, Kentucky, etc) and some because there is absolutely nothing else to do (Syracuse). On the whole, though, there generally aren't huge attendance numbers for college basketball. Only a handful of teams average 15k+.
If we did, we wouldn't get Spurs vs. Cavaliers or Colts vs. Bears.

I think Collin is right. Why should we have Championships decided by actually playing the game? It should all come down to votes by jock sniffers. They know the sport best. Maybe all the eligible team captains should have to answer a question such as "What is your biggest hope for the future?" before the final vote.

The best part is that the voters have missed 59 out of 60 times in hoops but it's the actual sporting event outcomes that have been wrong.
