Bobcats' May needs surgery, is out for season

WILMINGTON --Charlotte Bobcats forward Sean May's season ended before it began Friday when the team announced he needs microfracture surgery on his ailing right knee.

May has had cartilage problems in that knee both of his NBA seasons and was unable to accompany the team to Wilmington for training camp. Instead, he had several opinions from orthopedists including nationally known Dr. James Andrews of Birmingham, Ala.

Microfracture surgery is a procedure that drills tiny holes in a joint, attempting to grow scar tissue that can replace torn cartilage. The recovery time for such a procedure will put May out the entire 2007-08 season.

The team said May will have the surgery Tuesday in New York City, to be performed by Dr. David Altchek. The Bobcats released a statement from coach Sam Vincent: "Obviously this is a terrible blow for our basketball team and another setback for Sean. Sean has worked extremely hard to get back on the court this season, which is a testimony to his offseason regimen and professionalism, but at this time, we want what's best for him, and unfortunately that requires surgery."

May said Monday at the team's media day that the joint was functioning in such a way that he had no lift in his jump. He had been trying all summer to use rehabilitation to avoid the microfracture alternative.

May has played 58 of a possible 164 regular-season games in his NBA career since being drafted by the Bobcats 13th overall in 2005 out of North Carolina.

Even beyond May's injury, the Bobcats are shorthanded in big men. Othella Harrington is out for the preseason after arthroscopic surgery on his left knee. Center Primoz Brezec has been excused from training camp so far to attend to a family matter.

He's the Bobcats answer to Dan Morgan. Hopefully the Bobcats will have enough sense to not make him a vital part of their team so they can just cut him net year.

That swap for the Nets first rounder sure seems like a great deal now. He's great when he's on the floor but he's not much use spectating 80% of his career.

it sucks that May has become an injury waiting to happen but there was no indication he would be that from his college days - he broke his foot as a freshman - missed maybe a couple games as a soph with a knee tweak - otherwise he was a warrior the way he played.

Same goes for the Panthers and Morgan - he wasn't injury prone at Miami so it's not like the Panthers rolled the dice picking him on draft day.
