College Sporting News Announces the 2007 NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision Preseason All-American Teams

    College Sporting News

Chicago, IL -- Defending national champion Appalachian State leads the way on the 2007 College Sporting News preseason NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision All-American football teams with six players named overall.

Mountaineer senior tailback Kevin Richardson, who rushed a season-high 30 times for 179 yards and four touchdowns in the national title game last year to guide ASU to their second straight Division I crown is joined on the first team by teammates Kerry Brown at offensive guard and Corey Lynch at safety.

Northern Iowa placed four players on the All-American teams while McNeese State, Cal Poly, Furman, Montana, North Dakota State, Portland State, South Dakota State and Youngstown State landed three players each on the 75-player squad. There were nine schools that received two selections.

42 different schools and each of the 15 conferences received All-American picks lead by the Southern Conference with 12 selections, the Great West with 11 and the Big Sky had 10.

Reigning Walter Payton Award winner and New Hampshire quarterback Ricky Santos is one of only four players to repeat as first-team preseason picks. He is joined by fullback Jerome Felton of Furman, center Brennan Carvalho of Portland State and offensive guard Matt Alfred of Eastern Washington. James Madison safety Tony LeZotte, a first-team pick in 2006, made the second team this season.

Other players who made one of the three preseason teams in 2006 and were among the 75 players honored this year include Brown and Lynch of Appalachian State, Broderick Cole of Nicholls State, punter Mike Dragosavich of North Dakota State, running back Lex Hilliard of Montana, defensive end Kendall Langford of Hampton, quarterback Eric Sanders of Northern Iowa and kicker Rob Zarrilli of Hofstra.

There are also 12 players from the 2006 CSN postseason "Fabulous Fifty FCS Team" represented on this year's preseason honors squad.

On offense, Santos, Richardson, Brown, Felton, Carvalho, Alex Watson of Northern Arizona, Jerome Simpson of Coastal Carolina, Ramses Barden of Cal Poly and Josh Johnson of San Diego were 2006 honorees. On defense, Lynch is the lone repeater. Special teamers Steven Whitehead of McNeese State and Jayson Foster of Georgia Southern complete that group.

    The complete squad follows:

[Note: Peter St. John of Portland State (declared academically ineligible) has been replaced at offensive guard by Matt Jenkins of Texas State and Jeff Monaco of Yale has been added to the team.]

    Quarterbacks

I wouldn't take one of those QBs for Appalachian's guy. You would think that him being a frshmen last year and winning the National Championship might make for an explosive year for him. I would love to see him walking off with another trophy and all those other QBs can have the individual awards.

I really haven't had a chance to watch him, but it seemed alot of folks were real big on Ricky Santos last year as the best QB in I-AA.

    Newcomers

Let me give you a couple names of newcomers that are making some noise up on the hill.

#99 Tim Washington, DL, a transfer from LSU.
#95 Gordy Witte, DL, 6'6" 285, true freshman from Salisbury, gave a verbal to NC State but pulled committment after Amato was fired.

How about Western Carolina two weeks later, they line up against Georgia. And, they played Florida at the end of the year last year. I know these programs need the payday, but good lordy, your self esteem has to come into play sooner or later...jeez!!!!!!!!!!

as a recent WCU grad, the team's self esteem and fan support are low regardless. They didn't win more than 5 games a season my whole time there. Besides the one win over app and furman, they were shit for my whole 4 years. The crowd leaves early, and many students flee the mountains for the weekend anyways. At least they can make some money by playing florida, bama, and georgia. They sure won't make it by having winning seasons and making the playoffs.
