I found it somewhat entertaining to hear the "ole ball coach" rail about the accademics at South CakElakaE. Truth be told this is a good thing, a football player in Columbia may actually earn a degree. This type of thing happens at a number of schools all the time. The kid passes NCAA guidelines but is refused admission for failing to meet school requirements. Kind of shocking to hear about it happening at the chicken coop though.

Big time college football programs make millions off of their football teams. Recruiting kids and admitting them to the school benefits the school. I think that Spurrier is right. The whole "college is an academic institution" argument is completely flawed and this is why: Division 1 colleges spend an average of 27 million dollars a year on their athletics programs, and you have to figure that AT LEAST half of that is on football. Lets face it, Big time college football is a BUSINESS. For USC to not admit players that could be admitted is terrible for the school. Oh, by the way, Stever Spurrier makes about 1.25 million bucks a year.....show me a professor that is making that much money if college is supposed to be an "academic institution".

Bottom line the school is there for education. The Ole Ball Sack needs to get over it and recruit kids that can make a C in high school English.

The point of the whole thing is that he's telling kids they can get into USC and the administration isn't letting them based on different standards than what he was using. The two sides didn't get that straight in the first place.

Colleges have been making exceptions for athletes for decades. Like I said this is a business. In the 2006 season, nearly 48 MILLION fans showed up at college football games. Say you pay 40 bucks a ticket, which is a deal at most college football stadiums, that means that college football made over 1.9 BILLION dollars on ticket sales alone. when is the last time that a debate team made money for the school?

If you are going to only look at money then your argument is valid. The point is Spurrier lost a couple players that he thought could help. Any football coach at South Carolina can tell you that accademics have never been an issue with the Gamecocks, the whole SEC outside Vandy for that matter. I may be a little nieve but having some degree of integrity within an athletic program is refreshing.

yep. he basically said he looks like a liar to these kids.

and at the same time hes telling USC these same players would be admitted to other SEC schools, and if they want to be big dogs in college football they need to let the guys he recruits in school.

Heard an exSpurrier player on WFNZ a minute ago say So. Car's academic standards were a joke to Florida's. As a matter of fact he implied the stupid people went to South Carolina because they couldn't get in other places, and now Spurrier is bitching about eligibility??

He's just using it as an excuse for why he's not taking players he told otherwise while making the schools look better with a backhanded complement. He knew there were only so many he could take but he over-recruited.

I'm sure you've posted it before, but I'm too lazy to look it up. What college team do you pull for?
