so you're saying a ref can influence scores down? how did i get this wrong? where did you say that? i can't believe this argument stems from me saying something would be good and you saying that it's possible. but maybe your tone belies your essential agreement with the premise.

is that your latest version of the psychobabble? that i'm a compulsive arguer?

i don't get your logic here, tho. you say no ref can make a player miss a shot, hence you'd want to push the over. but no ref can MAKE a guy hit a shot, either. so you're left with calling a game that biases (in the statistical sense) the scores in whichever way you'd want them. i gave vp a pretty extensive list of ways one might keep scores down. none of them require forcing a guy to miss shots.

the fact is, there's no way you're going to be able to fix a game 100%. the question then becomes, what the best way to make money off of your knowledge of and the ability to influence the games you are reffing. the answer to that question depends on your risk aversion and philosophy towards gambling.

Funny. Half of your options involve fouls. And what happens after there are a certain number of fouls? Oh yeah. Foul shots.

Remember - the over doesn't care who wins.

oh yeah -- wait, i mean no.

first off, charge and illegal screen are the only two fouls i mentioned calling. secondly, offensive fouls are not team fouls. team fouls are what put people in the penalty. you could call 20 charges or illegal screens in a game and nobody would be shooting a ft because of it. it's a turn-over and personal foul. no free throws, ever.

the foul before the shot i was talking about is if an offensive player gets fouled and makes his shot, you call the foul as happening before the shot (if you can make a case for it). you wave off the made shot and instead of the player going to the line for an and-1, he's shooting two shots if they're in the penalty or it's side out of bounds if the defense isn't in the penalty.

3 second calls and travels are just turn-overs. and they're dead ball turn-overs, which means the defense is pretty much set by the time the ball makes it into the front court (as opposed to steals or bad passes which can lead to fast breaks and easy -- and quick -- scoring opportunities). playing against a set half-court deffense means you gotta run a play which takes time to get a reasonably good look.

i suppose i could take this moment to point out how little you seem to know about nba basketball, but i won't. :)

the wall is smarter than you, so i might just do that.

i find it odd that you'd visit a thread that's essentially an argument between somebody you're supposedly ignoring and a couple other people.

have to wait for the details to come out on the latest, but what I heard tonight is that this bum is going to roll on up to 20 other refs for gambling. the report didn't specify if those refs had bet on games, but that they may be in violation of league rules banning betting on anything outside of horse racing that can be done during the offseason. why should this be a surprise from a league who's old drug testing policy didn't test for all drugs?

looks like there's a new report on the donaghy deal.

seems his picks were more about who would win and not over/unders, tho the report didn't have access to donaghy or non-public details of the case.

the whole report is available online:
