So I'm not exactly sure what's wrong with my knee but on Saturday I did my leg workout. I think that may have started it. I usually do squats, leg extensions, etc. Yesterday I go out for a run and at around 1.8 miles, I stop b/c my knee was feeling odd so I walk the rest of the way. When I got home, that's when I really felt it. If I put any weight on it going up or downstairs, there's an acute pain. I can put weight on it somewhat but it hurts. I don't really feel the pain if I walk normaly. It really only happens when I put direct weight on the knee. I'm going to keep off of it for the next 3-4 days, rest, ice, compression, elevation. I think I might have just strained or sprained it? I've had this very thing happen 5 years ago when I ran about 6 miles. I had to keep off of it for about 2 weeks for it to fully heal.

    Any ideas?

A lot of times this sort of thing clears up w/o surgery or any intervention.

The menisci are little wedges that cushion your knee bones from rubbing together. If you have a tear or 'trash' in there, you will usually have swelling along with pain and it will hurt most of the time vs just with mobility.

An ACL or PCL 'anterior and posterior cruciate ligament' injury will usually make you feel unstable when you are on it. I guess that could go along with pain with mobility, I'm not sure. Knee injuries can be tricky. I've seen some extremely swollen, black and blue knees that are locked in position be normal on MRI and the reverse where there's a minor pain once in a while and the patient have a big tear, it's weird.

I think your plan sounds reasonable, but if you aren't better in a few days I would see an orthopod guy. I have some recommendations if you need them, let me know.

Where on the knee is the pain? Side(s), middle, joint? No matter what, you should go ahead and practice RICE and if it doesn't get better (or gets worse), you should go to the doc.........

    I am not a Doctor.

It's gotten better. I can put weight on it now but I can still feel some tenderness along the outside of my knee. It feels like it's reaching toward my lower back somewhere...a bit of a tingle sensation.

Just to give you some background, I had this very thing happen about 5 years ago but to a much worse extent. I couldn't put any weight on it for about a week but it didn't help that I couldn't keep off of it either. From that point my knees been feeling weird. I can still do physical activities and sports without a problem. The thing is I can pop my knee at will. I turn it a little it will pop, I wait a little bit more and turn again it will pop. It doesn't hurt any but I'm wondering what's going on in there. I really don't want to have surgery.

My knee pops like that too. I had a torn ACL years ago probably as a teenager and did not realize it had happened until some years later when I re-injured the same knee and had an MRI done. The end of the torn ACL attached to a different ligament so it still provides some support. The second injury was just a bone bruise.

If it's the outside chances are it's not the menisci. A friend of mine had that and strangely enough I am suffering from it as well. Mine is on the inside/side of knee in one specific spot. Feels like a nail is stuck in it and for absolutely no reason.. It wakes me up sometimes
