Here is what Gammons had to say in his blog. I still think that Lester has great potential, but how do you really project how well someone will bounce back from cancer?

It may be that the minor leagues, not the majors, are where the pitchers who impact races come from. Boston has already changed its rotation with Kason Gabbard and the bullpen with Manny Delcarmen, and may go to Clay Buchholz soon as another bullpen alternative once Curt Schilling gets back into the rotation. Buchholz's biggest question at this point is the command of his fastball, but he has big-time swing-and-miss pitches with his curveball and changeup, and that stuff may play very successfully in the bullpen as he prepares for the 2008 rotation.

 

Lester starts tonight.

 

Nice job Jon. He had some struggles with control but battled through it to get the win. Delcarmen had another nice outing as well.

 

Lester or Gabbard. it'll be an interesting decision as to who sticks in the rotation when Schilling returns. with all due respect to Lester, if Gabbard can prove he can handle a good team on the road (he faces the Indians Thursday), he is as deserving as anyone of the fifth spot.

 

wily mo pena. theo would be lucky to get a bag of baseballs and a cracked fungo in return.

that said, it really looks like a righthanded hitting reserve, preferably with power, is all this team needs. (Unless you believe the Houston Chronicle, which said the Sox are "desperate for bullpen help." WTF?; and also depending on how well the team believes Ortiz will hold up the last couple months). Bobby Kielty's name is being bandied about. Hardly a power hitter but probably an upgrade over wily mo. reggie sanders can be had for cheap.

who the fuck knows? It sure would help if drew would start hitting. every time I turn on espn, there's JD looking at a called strike three.

 

ST. LOUIS -- The pitching-starved St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday acquired right-hander Joel Pineiro, optioned to the minors last week by the Boston Red Sox, and cash for a minor league player to be named.

Pineiro, 28, was a 16-game winner in 2003. He was used exclusively in relief this year by the Red Sox before being sent to Triple-A Pawtucket on July 25.

Pineiro played seven seasons with the Seattle Mariners before signing a free agent deal with the Red Sox in January. He was 1-1 with a 5.03 ERA in 31 relief appearances for the Red Sox, but had a 3.60 ERA in 16 road appearances covering 15 innings.

The Cardinals' rotation has a 5.50 ERA and is without Mark Mulder and ace Chris Carpenter, who had reconstructive elbow surgery earlier this month. The rotation has included three former relievers, Braden Looper (4.85), Adam Wainwright (4.45) and Brad Thompson (5.15). It also includes Anthony Reyes, Kip Wells and Mike Maroth, who have ERAs above 5.00.

Reyes ended a 12-game losing streak on Saturday and will get at least one more start, probably bumping Maroth later this week.

Pineiro has a career record of 59-56 with a 4.50 ERA in 216 games, including 148 starts. He was 14-7 in 2002 and 16-11 in 2003

 

Apparently we got Gagne, who would be a great addition and could move into the closer's role next year. I won't know whether I like the move until I see who we gave up though.

 

Getting Gagne was great but the bullpen was already good. I know, I know, you can never have too much pitching.

 

I think they hope he can become the closer next year and get JP into the starting rotation. If so, I like the move. I still don't like giving up a potential stud left handed pitcher like Gabbard. Those don't come around too often.
