People in a couple of places have gone off on how they don't think Peppers is worth the kind of contract that he's going to get. So far, everyone I've seen basing that argument on sack totals.

You can try and explain that there's more to it than that, but some can't get past the numbers. Doesn't do a whole lot of good to being up "market value" either. Folks just look at the number without context, and thus they cringe.

Yes, it is about much more than sacks. The fact that he had more tackles in the first three games than he did in the final 8 are the kinds of numbers I can't get past.

His sack distribution wasn't a problem really at 8/5 for the halves of the season. But tackes seems significantly different at 40/17

Thelt makes a good point - the Patriots victory was just as fluky, if not more, than the Colts. If Marlon McCree had just fallen on the ball, the Patriots would have lost.

Almost every title game has some sort of "fluke" you can dismiss things on. Atypical implosion, amazing plays, controversial calls.

Hell, the Patriots got to the Super Bowl on the tucked ball call in 2001. John Kasay kicked the ball out of bounds in 2003, which is about as fluky as it gets.

Also, 7 years/90M doesn't bother me for some reason. Sign the man.

That's true of a lot of folks, but add that third digit and people go nuts.

Peppers and Smith are the only two guys on the roster I can see opening up the check book for. We've got 2 guys that are arguably the best at their respective postions in the prime of their careers.

Pay 'em and don't give average talent (not calling any names #69 & #70) stupid money like the rest of the league is doing and we'll be OK.

Will the Panthers be the closest thing to a college team in terms of signing guys for 3 or 4 years and then letting them go get rich somewhere else?
They paid Smitty pretty well and I know that they are about to pay Peppers ungodly money. However, much like Witherspoon I just don’t see guys like Gross and Gamble for instance getting to stay in Carolina and cash in too.
Can this team continue to thrive on retaining only the once in a blue moon star with big bucks and lean on turnover at most positions every year while leaning on the draft?
What other NFL franchise is currently having success with that philosophy

It will be interesting to see what happens with Gross and Gamble. Right now I'm pretty much OK with anything they want to pay Pep to lock him up for 6-8 more years. I would absolutley have a fucking stroke if we payed Gross some of the money that has been payed to some of the average Oline guys this offseason.
