    refreshing.

It would be somewhat comforting for us to make things tougher on the other 31 teams for a change.)

I don't think it will impact them any more than Freeney's deal already has. Polian dropped a nuclear turd on the market, and unless Peppers gets dramatically more (given the guy we have at GM, I suppose it's possible), that damage is done.

How much of Freeney's money is fake money?

at $30 mil in guarantees in two years, if that's how it's still reported, then there's $42 mil of salary, give or take. So half the contract will be paid out before 2008 ends. Hard to make it fake if it's already gone. Whether he'll make every bit of that contract or not is hard to say, but if they have to cut him after 2010, they'd save about $15 mil in salary and eat up every bit of that with cap proration.

15 mil /6 = $2.5 mil per year, and then obviously a second $15 mil over 5 is $3 mil more per year. So if he has around $6 mil in salary in those two years, then the last four years have to burden most of the contract despite the first two years having half the payout of the total contract. $36 mil paid out, $14 mil against the cap looks great for these two years, but it'll be awful when he has seven figure cap hits in a few years.

I see Clay's point. Didn't the Colts pay Manning like 5 billion dollars a few years ago? And didn't it eat up a lot of cap space? Yes, I know the cap went up, but I thought a lot of their money (present--at that time--and future) was eaten up by Manning.

It was. Manning, Harrison, Wayne, and Freeney account for nearly half of the team's salary cap. It doesn't look like they'll be in a position to afford any significant free agents for the remainder of those contracts, which means relying completely on those stars and filling in everywhere else with draftees and trash.

What do you think about what their LT is doing? He's threatening retirement but some people think it's a contract grab. Tarik Glenn leaving a week before training camp could be devastating to the Colts.

edit: I guess they are reporting that he did retire, that's nuts.

The Colts are putting all their resources into a small group of star players. That is probably not a terrible strategy though. They are guaranteed to be pretty good every year and it has gotten them a ring. A lot depends on them being able to draft players who can play well during their rookie deals and then being able to replace them when they leave as free agents.

No, it's not a terrible strategy. Paying too much to legitimate stars is definitely better than paying too much to players who aren't. I discount their championship as a fluke, but they do make the playoffs every year and thus have a chance. Manning is responsible for most of that, though, and I don't know that it's possible to emulate that blueprint given that you can't just expect to find a Manning. Overpay a next tier quarterback and I don't think the strategy works.
