Fiber optic TV from the phone companies will fix that problem if they come in. They've essentially got the same area to work with as the Cable Companies and more, plus the fiber lines can match and possibly beat the Cable companies in the data they can carry.

I think in this case it's actually the NFL network that is to blame, because they are trying to fore cable companies to carry them on their regular tier, which means thata cable company has to either pass the 20 cent (or whatever) charge on to every customer or to eat it for each customer.

I know you don't come into the football forum that often, but this issue has been discussed several times and you're incorrect. NFL Network is trying to force the cable companies not to put its channel on a separate pay tier, but with the proposed terms and the advertising involved, it is simply untrue that even having it on a regular tier wouldn't earn money for the cable companies (for example, DirecTV added it and did not raise rates, at least not for that). NFL Network published its proposal because the cable companies were lying about how much they wanted and how much it would cost consumers.

The problem is that those same cable companies which have successfully lobbied a corrupt Congress to prevent capitalist competition also want to make as much money as possible on channels like the NFL Network, and they don't want outside entities dictating where they will be shown. That greed is the same reason that the cable companies wouldn't match DirecTV's terms for MLB TV, and why there are a number of other channels that haven't reached distribution agreements.

I didn't realize there were 100 HD channels out there to offer.

As of right now the only thing they offer over Time Warner Carolina is Music HD and NFL Network.

A Manhatan judge disagrees with you. The league charges 55 cents per subscriber and stands to lose quite a bit by the move to a niche tier.

What sucks is that they won't do anything without sufficient bitching. People have to actually vote with their pocketbooks and most of us are too lazy or complacent to actually do that.

The judge isn't disagreeing, he just ruled that Comcast can put it in a premium tier.

Basically what Comcast (and other cable companies) want to do would be akin to taking ESPN off normal channels, stick it in a premium tier package, bundle it with Golf TV, Racing TV, and I dunno, Wrestling TV and charge you $5 for it.
