No championship since 1955. Good lord. Oregon State just got hot at the right time, which sucks because they probably shouldn't have even made the field of 64. Even getting to two consecutive championship series in that format is impressive, but that loses a crapload of luster when you lose them both (Braves of college baseball). Hopefully Porcello and Harvey come to school, as that would give them the dominating starting pitching they missed this year.

Cal and Washington both finished ahead of OSU in the Pac-10, but didn't have the non-conference resume to get in. The teams who some argued should have made it over the Beavers were Georgia Tech, College of Charleston, Gonzaga, Tennessee, and Alabama. Tech and CoC had the best cases, but Oregon State won some key games late in the season and obviously benefited from being the defending champs.

Oregon State was clearly better than Carolina during that series, but they also got extremely lucky in earlier rounds. While the Tar Heels had to play several of the top teams in the country, the Beavers dodged all the toughest opponents in their brackets. Had the favorites won, Oregon State would have needed to beat Vanderbilt, San Diego, and Arizona State or Texas. Then again, luck is a part of many championships and the Beavers certainly earned it on the field.

Part of the problem for Carolina was those damned black shirts. UNC should never, I repeat never, wear a black jersey.
