Warning Gutter - it's told as a fairy tale, despite the setting. It is NOT seven. Nowhere near that pace. And the freaky shit is very brief.

There's a ton of symbolism in it, but I couldn't tell you what it all means.

    *Spoiler*

Okay, I cannot quite reconcile the "sin" angle from the table of plenty, and what the girl does, and the freaky guy's wakening, but he is without a doubt the fairy tale representation of the captain. In fact, the girl's fairy tales are a mirror for the real life story going on. Ofelia and Mercedes are the same person... either at different phases of their lives OR two aspects of the same personality with Ofelia representing her childish innocence. Some people will disagree with that because of their strong belief in the escapism, but I think that escapism only reinforces the point.

In any case, the parallels in the fairy tale and the struggle against the Captain and the fascists are all over the movie. The door the girl ghooses with the key is a political statement in itself that is mirrored by the rebels, etc. The frog is... well I bet you can guess.
