It is a small market. They are the #22 TV market... only 4 spots ahead of Charlotte. They are the #23 radio market and their top newspaper ranks #36.

That's not an "argument" it is a fact. Pittsburg is a small market.

As far as your beloved steelers...there is a thread somewhere here where fan loyalty was ranked and they didn't do so well. The amount of available seats at Heinz field was staggering.

Also, you can't compare salary capped sports to non-cap sports. It's apples and oranges. Pitt is a small market with no money that can't make any tv money. The red sox signed a new radio deal last year that is twice the money that the pirates get from their tv deal. That, my friend, makes Pitt a small market.

Pittsburgh may be a small market (22nd in 06-07 Neilson ratings), but that hasn't kept other small markets from competing:

San Diego is 27th and have made the playoffs the last two years. and they compete in a tougher division than the NL central (I know, what division isn't tougher). St. Louis is 21st and won a title last year. On the other side of the coin, Philadelphia is fourth and hasn't won a title in 27 years. Dallas/FW is sixth and we all know how bad the Rangers suck. The Pirates blow not so much because of the size of their market, but because of piss poor management. But to be fair, management is somewhat hamstrung by god-awful fan support. when it comes to sports, Pittsburgh is a fairweather town for sure.

point is market size isn't as big a liablity as some would make it out to be, even ina non-cap sport like baseball.

It's a pretty big liability. When the red sox can sign a radio deal for more than half the teams get for a tv deal, there is a problem.

The owner in Pittsburg doesn't put his luxury tax revenue back into the team and that is a big part of the problem. If there isn't going to be a cap in MLB the league should force small market owners to put their luxury revenue back into the teams salary.

The Pirates could have signed some nice talent, instead their owner pocketed about 20 million...if I remember correctly.
