$1.7 mill per doesn't seem too crazy. Fuck do i know, though.

    Gross and Peppers = crazy.

$1.7 million a year for a punter is definitely on the high end.

doesn't seem as unreasonable as Kasay's contract in 2004, where he's older and hadn't been amongst the elite as much. It's still a lot. Specialists get a lot more five year deals than you'd expect, but they don't often see it all.

I believe Heinrich and Sauerbrun were getting paid around that much in the same time (2003-05, or whenever those contracts were out), but both were Pro Bowlers. Baker is a tier lower. As stated he was making $900k in his two year contract, and this is almost double after one year on the contract.

He works hard, goes to church, signs autographs and helps out in the community. I have no issues with giving him that much money.

and a punt is not a bad play

Nope. Sauerbrun topped out at $1.5 mil, and Hentrich is going to make $1.4 mil this season. I haven't checked everyone, but so far I haven't found a punter making more than Baker.

Anybody think that the Panthers think he'll be a helluva lot better than he is now?

I'd say $200k per year over a 5 year deal is close enough to be "around that much". Henrich's salary may have been $1.4 million but I believe his per year contract value is $1.6 million, though I couldn't find the specifics right off. What he's making in a year isn't really relevant, especially since many contracts like this are renegotiated almost every year and Baker won't be making $1.7 million this year.

For 2003-2004, the comparable contract is bigger than this one. Same for Sauerbrun. It's still a lot for Baker, undoubtedly.

Gantt says he'll be the highest paid for 4 years ( as of now ).

The new cap makes everything bat shit whacky. have any quality punters re-signed since the cap went whacky?

His per year value is substantially less than that, but he's making $1.4 mil this season and then $1.6 next year in the last year of that contract. In any case, others will probably make more in the years to come, but we appear to have made Baker the league's highest paid punter for now.
