Someone told me that REIT's are a good thing to put part of my retirement fund into. They are good because companies pay large dividends out in order to avoid tax on profits. Any thoughts?

REIT's are a good way to diversify a portfolio however I wouldn't heavily weight my retirement in them. 5-10% tops.

couldn't have said it better myself. the REIT portion of my portfolio helped me outperform the S&P500 by two percentage points last year. Of course, it is the reason I am underperforming this year.

I am a little higher than Sly as far as allocation goes...about 14 percent.
