hit that hubcap-sized face of yours with a shovel, that's what

I'll bet you root for Dustin Pedroia to make out every time he comes to the plate.

It's opinion unless we pull sports sections from the winter of 87-88 and 05-06, but Lee Smith was seen as more of a savior in early 88 than Beckett in early 06. The Sox had something like 16 saves in 1987, with Schiraldi's breakdown and Steam Stanley's rubber arm finally turning to mush. Smith was one of the mid 80s top closers, right up there with Quisenberry and Willie Hernandez. Beckett was a kid entering his prime with flashes of brilliance and major durability questions.

Speaking of straying, you bring up the Sox acquiring Beckett in the first paragraph, then the extension he signed when he was 12-3 in late July. I'm want to say he just pitched 7 or 8 innings of scoreless ball, then the extension was signed the next day. I want to say the opponent was the Royals. I mean, I really don't follow the team, so these are educated guesses.

So which media hype are you now talking about, the initial trade to bring Beckett in, or the extension signed six or seven months later?

You better knock me out with the first swing, because I don't take a "man" using a weapon on me very lightly.

Is cutting bait the same thing as giving a proven major leaguer more playing time? I never said send this kid back to Pawtucket or cut him.

But you did say to bench him and make him the backup. That is pretty much the definition of cutting bait. Just for the record, that would be even worse than sending a young guy back down.

The bottom line is that there is only one way to see if a guy can play - and that's to let him play.

I can't believe you guys are arguing, the Sox have it locked up. It's done. Over. Light out.
