Actually, no he can't go 70-30. He has had some no decisions already.

Who said he was the "heist of the century"? Every new player comes to Boston with hype. The media does that to bust them down later on.

the all-star selection was nice, but c'mon, the fans determine the starters. and it doesn't reflect what Loretta did the entire 06 season, which was hit .285 with a .345 OBP and .361 slugging with 59 rbis and 75 runs scored, 63 strikeouts to 49 walks, and a .986 fielding percentage. Yes, Mike, that's adequate at best. Pedroia will be doing that in his sleep in a couple years.

the media, ESPN talking heads mainly, but Boston beat-writers were pretty breathless in their assessments of the contract too. I thought you followed this team.

Yes, I do follow this team, since 1980. Remember Matt Young? Everybody thought he was going to "figure it all out" once he got to Boston. The Globe loves to hype anybody coming as a savior. Lee Smith was going to hand us a World Series, remember?

I'm assuming you are not going to respond to the Spike Owen - Jody Reed age difference. Owned.

I don't know how you can bring Matt Young or Lee Smith into a conversation about the relative merits of Josh Beckett's contract. But whatever.

spike owen is about 15 months older than Jody Reed. owned? whatever gets your dick hard. The point that you keep ignoring is this: the Sox replaced Owen with an upgrade in Reed, who was a productive starter for five more years, while Owen struggled to hit .250. now they've replaced Loretta with an upgrade in Pedroia. Five years from now we can compare the two. Or after this year for that matter.

The Cubs handed us Lee Smith for Calvin Shiraldi and Al Nipper. If you don't remember all the talking heads after the 1987/88 winter meetings giving us the AL East, I guess you haven't followed this team. I would consider this trade or salary dump a "heist", wouldn't you?

What the fuck? Do you really think that figuring that a healthy guy will get back to the way he was playing (but he doesn't because he blows out his shoulder) and wanting to cut bait on a young guy after 50 fucking games is really the same thing?

I remember the deals and vaguely remember the media reactions. not even close to the hype created when the sox got beckett. (I'm curious, are you comparing the impact of Beckett's addition to the sox to the addition of Young or Smith?)

Once again, you're straying. we were talking about the reaction to Beckett's three-year extension signed during the '06 season and the media's characterization of the terms of said deal as highway robbery. You quoted that old post and now you're trying to muddy shit up with talk about Lee Smith and Matt fucking Young.

if you have a point, now might be the time to try and make it.

    apparently, he does.

stay tuned as Mike blows your argument about Clement out of the water with talk about the hype surrounding Jose Melendez when he was traded from the Padres to the Sox for Phil Plantier.
