I think Bowie is considered a bust only because Michael Jordan was taken right after him. He certainly didn't live up to the expectation you'd have for a number two pick, but I don't think anyone that sticks in the league and contributes for a decade can be considered a "bust".

how can you not take into consideration draft position when determining who was or wasn't a bust? In my opinion, a player's performance with the team that drafted him has to be given the most attention. since we're looking at "draft busts," it's kind of irrelevant what he does once he gets cast away.

So Bowie played four seasons at Portland and pretty much put up his career numbers. 10.5 and 8.0. pedestrian at best. definitely not what one would expect from the overall number two. The Blazers sent him packing. Bust.

If you pass up the greatest player of all time, your pick was a bust.

I think it's kinda tough to call a guy a bust when he never reaches his potential because of injuries.

except he had an injury history (broken leg) before he got drafted.

and who's to say he didn't reach his potential? He was a fairly athletic big man who was above average as a passer; average at everything else. injuries just ensured that he'd be an average pro for 10 years and not 15.

Yes you can. If a guy doesn't reach his potential cuz he sux or is injured all the time, or tries to kill his wife and unborn child then they are big time busts.

Oh you can take it into consideration, but I think you also have to take into account who was behind him. From 1982 until 1990, the 2nd picks were Terry Cummings, Steve Stipanivich, Bowie, Waymon Tisdale, Len Bias, Armon Gilliam, Rick Smits, Danny Ferry, and Gary Payton. None of those was really a whole lot better than Bowie. Nobody is labeling any of those guys(at least the ones who are still alive) as big busts, and I don't think anyone would be saying it about Bowie if Jordan wasn't taken right after him.
