    What exactly is "self aware" If a horse is walking towards a barrier and moves to avoid that barrier, isn't he/she "self aware" of itself and moves to avoid ramming its head into the barrier?

    My understanding of self aware is that you can see your reflection in the mirror and realize that it's you.

    I think that chimps have been shown to do this and maybe elephants, but the list of things that are self aware is very small.

    watching a chimp check itself out in a mirror is pretty crazy. you don't realize just how exclusive that trait is to humans until you see something non-human do it.

    i'd hesitate to say that anything that chases and barks at its own tail is self-aware.
