Naw - I have mine going all year round, but re-do it fully every now and then. Mind you, I don't have snow'n'stuff to contend with - but it's worth giving it a go!

    Too Late ??????????

It depends on where you live.I live in the Foothills of North Carolina and I am able to grow two gardens each year. The first garden I start in April and then I have what I call my 4TH OF July garden which keeps my family and neighbors in fresh veggies till frost.
    Always share the bounty ..........

    Honeygirl...

I dont' know where you are from but here in North Carolina if you want to plant potatoes then now is too late in the year. We always planted them sometime in the latter part of March or beginning of April.

I'm 43 and my dad and us planted a lot of potatoes every year and like the others have mentioned above about cutting the potatoes up that you plant with an "eye" on each piece is right on the money. But we ALWAYS dug them out of the ground before July 4th because of the ground heating up in the summer and I guess (my dad is long gone now) that by getting them out of the ground and storing them where is is the coolest spot where they could get an airy summer breeze they lasted well into the winter until we had to cover them up to protect them from the cold. See we had no in the ground basement where you could put them so that they wouldn't freeze.

    Good luck, :biggrinjester: :biggrinjester:

Thanks Reelturner (and also Badback - sorry I missed your post earlier).

I don't live in the States - I'm just a `foreign girl' - so my seasons are up the wobbler.

Okay - here's the thing...they've gone nuts and the stalks / plant thing has come up about a foot above soil. I always had the belief that you waited until that died off before harvesting - is that right? I don't want to harvest too early - but I'm not sure. OutofState's link suggests waiting until the plant half dies off - does that sound right?

I'll post pics when I get them up!
