Carr's cap hit isn't that bad. Probably about 2.2 million this year, 4 million the next.

Julius's current cap hit is so huge, that we will be able to save money from this year's cap hit with proration. It certainly would not be more than the 15 million hit we are taking now.

Currently, we have about 9.5 million in cap space, pre Carr. Subtract 2.2 for his signing, and 3 million to sign rookies. So even if Pepper's hit stays as is, we have 4.3 million left for this year. That's a ton of unused cap space.

I'm not sure $4 million is a ton of money considering there are teams that would LOVE to sign either Smitty or Peppers who can offer much more lucrative contracts. There are teams out there that have in excess of $20 million in unused cap space. I'm sure that both of their agents are aware of that fact and the Panthers can't compete with that kind of purchasing power. Point being, we didn't have to spend that kind of money on a reserve QB.

Again, we have both players under contract for multiple years. The cap space of other teams is irrelevant.

Peppers is set to make serious change, with high salaries the next two years as FA approaches. He actually has little reason to sign a new contract, unless we throw about 6 years/ 30-35 million in bonus money at him. AND EVEN IF WE DID THAT, IT WOULD LOWER HIS CURRENT CAP HIT OF 15 MILLION BY HALF!!!!! bolded for emphasis, so you will understand.

Smitty, on the other hand, is under contract for the next three years. Like a lot of star players who signed contracts a couple of years back, he's not being paid what he would in the current market. He may be unhappy about that, but Panthers management has the upper hand. Still, with him under contract, we don't need 20 million in cap space this year to extend him. We could extend him with little impact on this year's cap, should we choose. I double we'd do that this year though, Carr or no Car, simply because of the number of years he has left on his contract.

That 20 mil can dry right up long before Smitty or Peppers hit the street as FA. They have their own players under contract whose salaries are going to go up, their own potential FA to sign, not to mention two draft classes between now and then. Give it a rest already. The team will get the deals done.

My bad, I was under the impression both contracts were going to expire in 2008. NFLPA used to list player salaries, but they don't anymore...at least it's not as easy to find with the revamped page.

I'll bring this topic back up in a year or two. :59:

Thanks for the information. I like how their old page was better. It was more user friendly.

I don't know, I have watched several of their games and when I say they have had a terrible line, they have had a TERRIBLE line. Also you have to think although our offense hasn't always been great, we have had a better line and more weapons on O than what Carr has had overall in his career.

Aside from that, I think the deal is just right, a short term contract with decent/good money to see if his problems were more of Houston or Carr.
