GBN Report has him going at 14. Kirwan at NFL.com has him going at 17. Maybe "everything you've read" means "the ones that support my want for Olson."

And he's a better prospect than Olson. At a greater need.

So the *earliest* you've seen him taken is 14, while the vast majority of other sites have him take 8+ spots later. Nope, doesn't sound like a reach to me.

I *want* Landry. If we could trade down to ~20 or so I would love to have Nelson. Just not at 14.

As I don't believe Landry will be available, I think Anderson, Willis, or Levi Brown would be the best pickup at 14. I'd take Olsen over Nelson, but after those 3.

Our Defense is still one of the best in the league, and while a great playmaking safety would be awesome, I think there is only a single true one in this year's draft. Nelson is undersized and doesn't wrap up as well as he should. That isn't what I want at the bottom half of the draft.

One very important note that has been missed with Olsen...We could save a roster spot by drafting him because he is also a LONG SNAPPER!!!! :drink:

maybe nelson will be there at #20 (and maybe he won't), but the panthers draft at spot #14 and if they want him, that's where they'll take him.

lt's put it this way: if/when the panthers take nelson at 14 on draft day, none of the talking heads will say that it's a reach or that they drafted outside of a need area.

If we were to spend our first on a TE I'd want him to be a "can't miss, gonna be a star" type. Olsen may be that but I don't see it.

Bottom line though is we get a good starter with that pick.

Nelson at 14 is pretty much a given with what the Panthers haven't done in FA. Gonzales with both Siler and Miller still on the board? Don't think so. An oft injured Edwards in the 3rd? Can't see it either. Depending on who is taken in the 2nd, Higgins, Patrick, and Waters are better options. Frankly, if we're bringing in either Carr, Harrington, or some other experienced backup I don't see us grabbing a QB this year.

These sites that your talking about are the same sites that cop out when it comes to the Panthers pick, don't do their homework or pay attention during the season, and then when it comes to mock draft time, stick the Panthers with a TE. They do it every year, and we never go with a TE in R1.

I've been trying to think of a way to respond to this idea, but I can't bring myself to comment on the ludacris nature of the idea. Nelson's value means so much more for the Panthers.

The annual TE chronicles gets old. It's obvious the pundits are just skimming and not really doing thier homework.

You're being a smartass, and cudos on being so straightedge and all, but no that's not really a reach. Your "vast majority" of four sites have him a grand total of 8 spots away and you're griping about it being some huge reach?
Sure, our D was very good without a great FS. But right now we have nothing at all. As it stands, we need at least one starter. Put Minter and Nate Salley/Deke Cooper out there and see if we're still that great.

Olsen is a fine prospect. He can't block, but that's fine. Regardless, the only thing that changed between now and December is that he ran a blistering 40. If he'd shown to be that athletic in all phases, I'd say you have a better case for him to be an elite TE. I'd take him at 14, but he's not a better prospect than Nelson.

I don't think Nelson at 14 is a given. Most people don't have him that high, and Fowler said in his column a while ago the Panthers don't think he's good enough to take there. That may have been before he ran. Or it may have been smoke, or not even true.

They could take Ss in the 2nd and 3rd. Jamaal Anderson may be there. (DE). They may like a LB. I think Olsen is a possibility too. He also had exceptional position drills. (Ran great patterns, looked very natural catching the ball, etc.) "Experts" talk like those drills are more important than the cones and the shuttles for judging athleticism. I don't like WR, but its not impossible.

They haven't signed anyone at those positions either. And people like Branch and Williams will still be available after the draft, probably. I do think they clearly want to see if they can get some Ss in the draft before they spend any money.

I was being a bit of a smartass, granted. However, those 4 sites were just the first four I checked, and I would argue that most other sites do not have him going before 22 or so and almost none would have him going before 14. The guy is practically guaranteed to be there at 14 and that doesn't make him seem like a good value to me.

In addition, those 8 spots may not be a big deal during the second day, but when you are talking about the difference between spots 14 and 22 its pretty significant (57% to be exact). Hell, if we went 8 spots the other way we would be picking at 6 with Landry in our laps.
