but wants to ask a question. When he read the Morning Hearald, this morning, he concluded that they left at halftime, there was no mention made what so everf, of the sorry plays Ruterford ran last night or the excellent potential that DeFore showed last night.(for being a Rookie in his first game, 2 touchdowns ?| Be interesting to see what happens with him :wtf23: :wtf23: :wtf23:

The tired Old Coot named John ( look out Dukey O.C. is gaining on you )

I would imagine LeFors would get the 3rd Q next just because of a rotation. I'm not too impressed with Rutherford, never have been.

    Did you read this one?

As preseason debuts go, Saturday night was pretty much perfect for the Carolina Panthers.

They honored one of the best players in franchise history in an emotional halftime ceremony and emerged without any major injuries. They also dominated the Washington Redskins when the first teams were playing and ran their exhibition winning streak to 10 games.

The first- and second-team offenses were in midseason form, and the defensive units were solid as the Panthers defeated the Redskins 28-10 in front of 61,699 at Bank of America Stadium.

"For a first time out, I thought it was good," coach John Fox said. "But, until we view the tape, you can't dissect it."

Rod Gardner, acquired in a trade with Washington on the eve of training camp, got revenge on his former team as the first-team offense looked as efficient as it did at just about any time last season. Gardner caught a 21-yard touchdown pass from Jake Delhomme with 8 minutes, 17 seconds remaining in the first quarter for Carolina's first points.

"To get it as quick as I did was bittersweet," Gardner said.

That nine-play, 67-yard drive was set up by Chris Gamble's interception of Patrick Ramsey. Carolina's first-string players were done after the first quarter, but they made the most of their limited time.

Delhomme completed six of 10 pass attempts for 68 yards and finished with a 113.8 quarterback rating.

"The first drive was great," Delhomme said. "We went down the field and were able to hit some short passes. We got a lot of pressure from Washington and the offensive line was the key. They gave us time and we were able to make some plays down the field. Rod Gardner made a great play for the touchdown."

The first-string defense stopped Washington with Gamble's interception on the first series and forced a three-and-out on the second.

But the biggest highlight of the night came at halftime when the Panthers retired the No. 51 jersey of former linebacker and linebackers coach Sam Mills. Team owner Jerry Richardson announced that no other Panthers player will ever wear No. 51 and presented a framed jersey to Mills' family. Sam Mills' son, Sam Mills III, accepted and gave a brief speech. Stadium scoreboards showed video highlights of Mills' career.

The Panthers didn't suffer much of a drop-off after the starters left. Quarterback Chris Weinke, well on his way to earning the backup job, engineered a touchdown drive.

Weinke was 6-of-9 passing for 79 yards and finished with a 131.2 rating. He threw a 1-yard touchdown pass to tight end Michael Gaines with 7:08 left in the half. Weinke's 26-yard pass to Karl Hankton set up the touchdown.

The Redskins didn't score until John Hall kicked a 43-yard field goal as the half ended. With Mark Brunell replacing Ramsey, Washington rallied in the third quarter against a defense comprised of second- and third-stringers. Washington cut the lead to 14-10 when Nehemiah Broughton scored on a 1-yard run with 1:30 left in the third quarter.

Carolina's offense was unproductive in the third quarter when Rod Rutherford worked at quarterback, but resurfaced in the fourth when rookie Stefan LeFors led the third-team offense to a touchdown. LeFors hit Drew Carter with a 1-yard scoring pass with 9:16 remaining and Aaron Boone with a 24-yard touchdown strike with 3:51 left.

    Washington 0 3 7 0 -- 10
    Carolina 7 7 0 14 -- 28

The paper may have a deadline (for filing stories) before the game ended. Those deadlines are usually ironclad.
