    Official Student Football Poll

Students say they'd pay for football

Nearly 60 percent of UNC Charlotte students polled said they'd attend five or six home football games if there were a Charlotte 49ers team.

Almost eight in 10 said they are willing to pay higher fees to get a team, according to the Student Government Association poll, though the size of the increases they'd support differ.

About 26 percent of students said they'd pay up to $100 more in athletic fees to pay for a football team. Another 23 percent said they'd pay up to $200; 9.5 percent, up to $300; and almost 20 percent, up to $400.

About 22 percent said they wanted no fee increase.

UNCC students currently pay $425 in athletic fees.

Those fees are considered one of the major revenue sources for a football team. Other possibilities include corporate sponsorships and ticket sales.

The SGA poll was touted as the first official survey of the student body on football. A total of 8,300 students, or about 39 percent of UNCC's student body, voted between Feb. 12 and Sunday.

    Students also were asked:

    • How far they would travel off-campus for a home game: About 56 percent said 10 to 15 miles.

    • If football would boost their interest in other Charlotte 49ers sports teams: About 59 percent said yes.

    • Whether they would come to football games as alumni: Just over 67 percent said yes.

    • How many football games they attended at other schools last season: About 63 percent said at least one, with roughly 10.5 percent saying they had attended seven or more.

Chancellor Phil Dubois recently named an 11-member advisory committee that will study the feasibility of adding a football team. The group will be chaired by Mac Everett, outgoing chair of the UNCC board of trustees.

If we all look at the growth of the student body of the last few years we know that having a potential fan base is there. Its hard to PAY to go to school somewhere and not have pride in even a sucky football team. Not to mention turnover in students from year to year I believe that it would take a while for niner football to catch on but would eventually rise above. If we are worried about the funding then we must simlpy follow a model of one of the other schools to recently add football (UNC Charlotte would not be the first). Hell look at App. State.... they start off the year's endorsement game by picking one of the slobber knockers in the top 25 even back when a D-IAA national championship was a whim. Why? Payday. A check for a billion dollars (not sereious for all you nit-pickers out there) is nice way to start off the season even if you loose. Wins and losses are usually forgotten in a year or two but the money for these types of games pay dividends year after year for the school and program. I am willing to bet no school has added football to its varstiy sports and looked back ten years down the road and said "Damn... what the hell was that? We make our living providing higher education and we let the shool do this??"
