Tar Heels rally, sign big-time recruits

Butch Davis Coach Butch Davis put together a stunning finish to his first North Carolina recruiting class Wednesday on national signing day with a handful of high-profile signings.

Greg Little, the Durham Hillside wide receiver rated the top player in North Carolina by the Observer, reneged on his commitment to Notre Dame and signed with the Tar Heels. Hillside athletics director Bob Hill said Little didn't sleep much Tuesday night.

"With the new addition of coach Davis, it kind of put a new wrinkle on it," Hill said of Little's decision.

The Observer's No. 2 player, wide receiver Dwight Jones of Burlington Cummings, had decided to attend Tennessee until shortly before his news conference Wednesday.

Then he called North Carolina linebacker Durell Mapp -- another Cummings graduate -- and changed his mind by the end of the conversation and signed with the Tar Heels.

North Carolina beat Florida State and Southern California for defensive tackle Marvin Austin of Ballou High in Washington, D.C., and signed 6-foot-7, 375-pound offensive tackle Kevin Bryant of Lauderdale Lakes, Fla.

Austin is rated the No. 3 player in the nation by Scout.com.

Fullback Devon Ramsey of Red Bank, N.J., also was a big late addition to the class, which Scout.com regional analyst Miller Safrit said will be ranked in the top 20 nationally. Safrit said getting key commitments on signing day is unusual for North Carolina, but not for Davis, who was used to getting them with the Miami Hurricanes.

"It's usually just the opposite with a lot of the big-name guys they (North Carolina) have been on and gone elsewhere," Safrit said. "This is definitely something new to the fans in regards to getting some guys."

North Carolina did lose out on one high-profile player in the state -- defensive end Kourtnei Brown of Victory Christian in Charlotte. Brown, who had originally committed to Alabama, signed with Clemson.

Great day for Tar Heel fans. Now if that potential can be applied on the field in 2007 we'll have something to cheer about!

I'm hoping for an above .500 season this year. Don't care if its one game over .500, but I want at least that.

Same here. To be competitive in every game is worth a lot considering how we've played most of the last 6 years.
