Davidson wanted the OC job in Cleveland, he interviewed with Savage for it, and he was rejected. Also, I can't find any evidence to support the rumor that Mangini wanted him to be OC for the Jets. The only things I've found that mention it only have it as a rumor and an explanation for why he became assistant head coach, but as others point out, that couldn't have been the cause because you don't need to add a title to prevent an assistant from interviewing with another team anymore. Now they can't move while under contract unless the current team gives permission, and I can't find any article anywhere that says Mangini even asked the Browns for permission, much less that they turned him down.

I don't believe any reason for so many teams to have reported Mangini wanting him, and it not being true. Coaching speculation is the extent of news. It went as far as the NFL pointing it out:

I just don't see any reason to not give it credence.

Maybe because there isn't a single article anywhere that says Mangini actually asked for permission to interview Davidson. We get media reports all the time about teams denying permission, but we have none for Davidson. Why? Maybe it actually happened, or maybe Davidson's agent fed some information to Sheffler and then every other story ran with the same rumor. You were ready to dismiss the McCoy talk in the media, so why not this?

There are numerous stories on it. Are you directly suggesting all are wrong?

I'd say the reason that McCoy talk got dismissed is because the only one saying anything was one specific reporter, talking about one specific coach in conjunction with an agent's name. Clearly, the agent was feeding this information.

In Davidson's case, you've got tons of names talking about, what, four different situations? That's not one guy trying to pump his client up so he can get paid.

Not every ex-Bill Belichick staffer is in hot demand. They can’t all be Eric Mangini, Nick Saban and Charlie Weis.

Cleveland head coach Romeo Crennel survived the first week of the offseason, but while he’s hanging on by a thread, his staff is undergoing some major changes. Wide receivers coach Terry Robiskie and tight ends coach Ben Coates (the former Patriots [team stats] All-Pro) were let go Friday along with offensive quality control coach Carl Crennel II and strength and conditioning coach John Lott.

According to reports, those offensive assistants were told prior to the final week of the season that they should get their resumes ready.

The news was apparently delivered by offensive coordinator Jeff Davidson, a former assistant offensive line/tight ends coach for Belichick in New England who took over for the fired Maurice Carthon in November. Davidson has survived at least for now, but more heads could roll as Crennel continues to meet with GM Phil Savage and owner Randy Lerner.

It’s been a tough couple of years for Davidson. At one point he was thought to be the heir apparent to Weis as the Pats’ offensive coordinator, but he read the writing on the wall and saw Belichick was leaning toward Josh McDaniels following the 2004 Super Bowl season, so Davidson jumped ship with Crennel.

Last offseason, Mangini wanted to bring Davidson to the Jets asoffensive coordinator, but the move was thwarted when Davidson was named an assistant head coach with the Browns.

Meanwhile, former Pats linebackers coach Rob Ryan, the defensive coordinator in Oakland the last three years, has to wonder about his status even though his Raiders defense finished third overall in the league. Head coach Art Shell is out after just one year, and changes are imminent.

Then again, defensive coordinators are thought to be superfluous in Oakland since owner Al Davis still involves himself heavily on that side of the ball. Ryan was hired as part of Norv Turner’s staff in 2004 (after Mangini turned it down) and survived Turner’s firing two years later.

No, there was one story suggesting it and then a number of subsequent stories that repeated what the first story said. You know as well as I do that a rumor can spread and be taken as truth without any sort of evidence for it. And like I said, are there any stories whatsoever about Mangini actually asking for permission to interview Davidson?
We've got a rumor about Mangini's interest that doesn't appear to be true since we have no evidence that he ever even asked to interview Davidson. We obviously do know that the Browns interviewed him, and we know that they turned him down and went with someone else twice. We also know that Whisenhunt didn't actually interview Davidson. The Cleveland Pain Dealer just suggested that Arizona might have interest in him because they assumed he would not return to the Browns as a position coach.

    Wp28:
I already addressed that. The rumor that kept being reported was that Davidson was promoted to prevent him from going to the Jets, but I referenced the fact that someone here (lde maybe) already pointed out that the rules had changed and you didn't need to make someone an assistant head coach to keep them from moving. All Cleveland had to do was to deny a request since Davidson was under contract, but there are no stories suggesting that they were ever asked by the Jets.

    Browns readying pink slips
Source: Offensive coaches get notice Thursday, January 04, 2007Mary Kay CabotPlain Dealer Reporter
Browns offensive assistants were told in a meeting before the season finale in Houston that they might want to start for looking for other jobs, a source with knowledge of the situation said.

The news was delivered by interim offensive coordinator Jeff Davidson, who took over midseason for Maurice Carthon, who was fired. It is not known if Davidson, also the offensive line coach and assistant head coach, will be retained.

Davidson received the added title of assistant head coach last off-season when Jets coach Eric Mangini was interested in him as offensive coordinator.

Wp28, please actually read before posting. It has already been addressed repeatedly that you did not need to make someone an assistant head coach anymore to keep them from moving laterally.
