Still doesnt explain why some were down.

And also, hes been trusted to run offenses for two seperate teams before. Saying neither Belichick or Crennel "didnt think he was good enough" to be their OCs is pure speculation and nothing else. If you are going to point out that he was overlooked, fine, and its a valid point. But we dont know what went on there.

What happens if he isnt worth a shit? Who knows, man. What happens if Fox takes a shit on Richardson's front lawn? What would've happened if McCoy wasnt worth a shit, or Zampese, or Skipper?

Davidson was a more attractive choice for me than all three of those guys.

No, it's a fact. Belichick and Crennel both had OC openings. Both of them passed on Davidson and chose other candidates.
I wouldn't have felt any better with McCoy, but what I hoped for was someone with actual experience. Say what you want about Henning, but while he may not have been the most dynamic offensive coordinator in the world you certainly knew he was going to be solid. We have no idea what we're getting with Davidson, and while it may be great, I don't think you make that move unless you know that you're going to be upgrading. Although it may eventually turn out that way, there is no way I can look at Davidson vs. Henning and see that as an upgrade right now.

Our offense has never really been much worse than it was last year. Even when we went 1-15 we were able to move the ball as well if not better than we did this past year.

I'm not down on him, was just more up on a guy with a proven track record with QB's. Because I have been looking forward to the moment Henning retired/left, seeing it as the best time to make a move and get a guy who'd be ready in a couple of years. Perfect timing for something like that, in my world. This makes it seem like we're not going that direction.

OTOH, I've dogged our OL play in the running game for years and recognize that a guy who's been there might understand how to get us pointed in the right direction. I like what I'm hearing about him.

Then we replace him. Any experienced guy who is available has probably proven he's mediocre at best. I'd rather take a chance on someone who has not had a real chance (half a season with someone else's O doesn't count), who could be really good.

Cleveland and NE also hired some very good candidates. Cleveland hired the guy who would have been in line to succeed Cameron in SD, and NE seems to have an endless supply of good coaches. I don't think its necessarily a bad thing to lose out to those guys. Neither of those coaches said he wasn't good enough. They said someone else was better.

Unsurprisingly, you're wrong. We were dead last in yardage for 2001.

So ... uhm ... don't fire Henning until you know that a better candidate will be available.
Actually that's a great point that I hadn't realized. Davidson wasn't just passed over in Cleveland once, he was passed over twice. So we got the guy who wasn't good enough to be OC for the Browns in two separate openings. That sounds fucking awesome, it really does. Who are some other Cleveland rejects we can "upgrade" with?

I agree. And the guys who worked with him, apparently think well enough of him. I'm not sure of the timing, but I think I read that he left for Cleveland before NE named an OC. Mangini wanted him. Did I read that Whisenhunt wanted him?
