Unbelievable. With all the available choices, they go and pick the most mediocre, average candidate they can find.

I remember folks saying the same thing about Mangini this time last year.

You just never know. On the surface, it's a questionable move. But who the fuck am I to say anything? I would think Fox knows what he needs a little more than I do.

Why do you think he's mediocre? People criticized McCoy because he trained under Henning. This guy trained under Charlie Weis.

Here's something that seems like its from NE source a couple of years ago. I'm copying it from the Huddle board

<<he question has been floating around for weeks. Who's going to be the Patriots' next offensive coordinator once Charlie Weis finishes his duties after Sunday's Super Bowl and heads to the University of Notre Dame?

Yesterday at Media Day, Patriots tight end and assistant offensive line coach Jeff Davidson -- reportedly one of the leading candidates for the job -- steered clear of the question.
"That is not an issue this week," said Davidson, with a smile and shake of his head. "I'm looking forward to the game on Sunday and concentrating on preparing for it. It's not something I'm going to discuss."
Davidson has the credentials to support his candidacy. He's in his 14th season in the NFL, his 10th as an assistant coach (eighth with the Patriots).
Two years ago, when Weis had physical problems that sidelined him throughout the 2002 exhibition season, Davidson ran the offense.>>

Foxy wanted Weis years ago. If he can land Weis Jr., I'm down with that.

    Jeff Davidson's bio.

I think it's a reach at this point to infer that he was Weis' protege, or anything close to it. He was TE coach/ Asst. OL coach for NE while he was there. His OL coach/Asst. HC in CLE is the highest title he's held in his coaching career. It's apparent he knows TE play well, and OL play at least reasonably well. But what about the main skill positions? Can he develop QBs? Can he scheme for an elite WR like Smitty? How well does he evaluate the players themselves? How good was he, really, at playcalling during his brief stint as interim OC for the Browns last year?

These are serious questions that, as of right now, Zampese answered a lot better than Davidson, IMHO.

Yeah -- if nothing else, I think it's fair to say we should expect an upgrade and better utilization at the TE position.

Why does all of that matter? Fox just wants to run the ball. Just throw it to Smitty when there is 8 or 9 in the box
