Makes no sense. You aren't competing against others in your year of eligibility. Either you qualify, or you don't.

What I don't like is that you you have writers that vote for Jay Buhner
Ken Camintte, Bobby Bonilla, Eric Davis and Brett Saberhagen. All good players and All-Stars at some point in their careers BUT worthy of a HOF VOTE???? Joe Diamago didn't get in on his 1st try. Tom Seaver had 98% when i got in. Was he the Best Pitcher ever? NO he was the nicest guy to the media. Baseball is a numbers game and by no way means do those guys deserve consideration! Tony Fernandez, COME ON!!!
Don Mattingly gets more votes than Dale Murphy?
The other problem is you have to be a cover a MLB team for at least 10 years. So out of college I get a job of covering the Cleveland Indians the "Mentor Times(no such paper). It's 2007 now I have a vote and I have never seen Dale Murphy,Steve Garvey, Tommy John, Dave Concepcion, Bert Blyleven or Goose Gossage play but now I hold their HOF consideration in my hands. BS.:bsflag:

    Just my 2 cents

    Yep...he should.

It's a joke that the baseball writers feel they must be the one's to make up the rules as they go along. For them to not select him this time to make a point, then elect him later is assinine. Either he is or isn't selected, but to try to punish him because they "feel" like he shouldn't be selected this time is an example of their arrogance.

A couple of sportswriters wouldn't select anybody, including Ripken and Gwynn, simply because they played during an era that included steroids. What morons!!!!! They should be stripped of their voting priviledges.

I know this, if they had performance enhancing drugs back in any era, there wouldn't be anyone on the ballots.

Most ballplayers have always tried to find ways to get an edge....and if they had an opportunity to use the drugs available now, many would have.

Heck, back in the 70's, you could find a bowl of "greenies" amphetamines in every clubhouse.

when I was playing high school ball in the early '80, we did CGCs, also know as Cosmic Gumbacco Cud (LSD encased in Red Man tobacco and wrapped in Big League Chew). It made it seem as if our pitcher's curveball broke five feet.

I agree. So let's be consistent and just keep him out all together. No today. No tomorrow. No forever.

McGwire doesn't deserve to get in precisely because there's no way he would have had a Hall of Fame career without steroids. As much as I hate Barry Bonds, he would have been a Hall of Famer if he had retired in 2000 before taking anything. McGwire couldn't hit for average, couldn't play defense, couldn't run the bases, and couldn't contribute to his team in any way except for steroid-enhanced power. That was his only skill and it happens to be the one most strongly influenced by steroids, so no, he doesn't deserve to get there. At absolute best McGwire might have duplicated the career of Darrell Evans, which would have made him a very good player, but not Hall-worthy.
