but they also gameplanned him to throw for a franchise-record 423 yards a few weeks prior?

that's not exactly sitting him on the bench.

maybe what happened sunday was more of an indictment of the receivers. i don't think so. llike i said: it was a wrinkle thrown in to gain an advantage and catch the opponent off guard. and it worked. over and over and over.

i havent seen any quotes to tell me otherwise. you guys are trying to read between the lines instead of giving the coaching staff credit for a heck of a gameplan to keep this team alive for a super bowl run.

Atlanta had a structural weakness that could be exploited, and I'd imagine they were a little scared of John Abraham. I don't believe that they were just petrified of letting Weinke throw, otherwise Basanez would have been in there, but I do believe that Weinke has shown some frustrating weaknesses that keep him from being an adequate performer. As long as his only responsibilities are to come in relief during a game, I suppose he might be considered good enough, but we'll never know if we need him to start and he doesn't look good at all in that role. Unfortunately, his current weaknesses are still the same ones I thought he had coming out of college, and that plagued us during the 2001 season. I hoped he might have overcome them, but that does not appear to be the case. Regardless, I'm pretty much resigned to our QBs being essentially the same ones we have now.

He threw it 62 times trying to bring them back from a deficit. Very few of his throws were down field shots, the Giants gave him loads of shots underneath, and as you peck away at the field, they bent, but didn't fully break. Weinke got the 400+ yards that way. Yes he hit Carter on the TD pass, but if memory serves, he didn't really take another deep shot that had a chance.

And no, I am not one of those folks applauding Henning for a fabulous game plan, I am just saying that the wrinkle was designed to take him off the field. They converted 1 3rd down with Weinke at QB, and 7 (or was it 8) 3rd downs on direct snaps (with no QB).

Just seems to me that they have no faith in his ability.

No sacks is a goal, not a requisite. Obviously the fewer, the better.

    Yep.

    Yep.

Not at all. In fact, I'd be happier with around 200 yards passing.

Not at all. One is fine, two is phenomenal. 100 ypg is the standard in this league. Every back in the league is measured by it.

    Yep.

Yep. It's not realistic to expect 100% conversion, but again -- the more, the better.

Not a requisite for success, but to ignore the potential of the position and the effect it has on the entire offense is to dig onesself in an offensive hole.

    Yep.

    Every drive is sufficient.

How about constantly fine-tuning the game plans and schemes to get the most out of the players on the roster?

IMHO, Weinke has lost his "serviceable" status (and I've been a closet Weinke fan for a while now). He's absolutely horrid. Too much rust, not enough coaching, whatever. The simple fact is that he's not viable as a backup anymore. Not when a rookie 3rd stringer can come in and move the ball twice as well as he can.

Drafting another rookie QB is pointless until we have someone on staff who's willing to coach QBs beyond "stand here and see if you can drop this ball in that barrel over yonder".
