    >> why doesn't everyone KNOW this to be the case? weinke is the guy who just a few weeks prior went out and set the franchise record for single-game passing yardage.

    we should KNOW he was told to take sacks rather than throw the ball away? i'm struggling with that idea.

    He took three sacks in ten attempts. Weinke just wasn't good this week. He certainly wasn't the week before.
    I think we all know how utterly meaningless 400 yards is in the case that it was attained.

    That's a lot to assume in one sentence. I don't think anyone hates Weinke at all, I think it's simply a matter of wanting more than we got.

    Sure, I think that was part of it, but we've seen horrible pocket presence from Weinke dating back to his rookie season. He doesn't take sacks because his protection is bad; he takes sacks because he holds the ball too long. Besides, if you're going to drop back only 10 times, you don't want your quarterback to lose yardage at any point.

    No, I don't think anyone "hates" Weinke. We just realize that he's a #2 quarterback, at best. He would probably be the #3 inactive on most teams that have three quarterbacks.

    man, there's no pleasing this group.

    i guess the offense needs:

    * no sacks (not sure who gets the credit though, the offensive line or the quarterback)

    * no fumbles

    * no interceptions

    * 300 yards passing

    * 100 yards rushing by both (!) backs

    * no dropped passes

    * convert all third downs

    * has an involved tight end

    * never have a play that loses yardage

    * score a TD on every drive...nay, every play!

    am i missing anything?

    ps -- my point about weinke is that he's not the worst option ever for a backup QB. there's no way a godawful quarterback backup QB goes out and passes for 400+ yards in this league. ever. he didn't flub up that drive last year (year before?) when jake went out and we needed the score. weinke is a backup, and a servicable one at that. i rest my weinke case.

    If you throw the ball 62 times, you should get 400 yards.

    I agree with you about him being a back-up, but I just don't think he's a very good one. We really haven't noticed until now, because Jake has been very durable over his career, and we've overlooked some sloppy preseason performances because he made a few plays against a crappy Lions defense. But the guy hasn't been playing well, at all. When you drop back 10 times, get sacked 3 times, and fumble once, that should be a clue. The fact that we only called 10 passing plays against one of the league's worst pass defenses is also a clue.

    He isn't very good.

    No, we don't need that. Everyone would've burned down the stadium with Jake if that happened. We've just never seen a team have the confidence issues with a QB where he consistently got pulled on 3rd down.

    I really think we can stop quoting the 400 yards stat as a useful matter. It was a nice personal milestone for him and it was a terrible, terrible loss.
