Considering Pantherfanz untimely death, and my growing gut problem, and since I am already 8 years older than he was, though I really wasn't considering making any resolutions this year, I am making a promise to myself to get in better shape. The main way I lost a lot of weight before (other than getting sick) was simply cutting down on soft drinks, counting fat grams, working out, and not going back for 2nds on meals, and eating a few small meals during the day instead of a 3 normal or large meals.

So today, I brought my workout clothes for the 1st time in months, and am hitting the gym after work.

Also, a few other things I feel are important

Cutting out salt - there's enough salt in food anyway - this is one of the few things I have continued on a regular basis, I haven't added any salt to food in years.

Alcohol consumption - even though mine has decreased considerably on a per day basis over the last few years, the amount I drink when I do drink unfortunately has not - I've got to learn moderation again.

Smoking - I quit for a whole year, and then when my alcohol consumption gradually increased, I started again. I never smoke unless I am drinking - so if I can't control the smoking when I am drinking, I may have to give up drinking as well.

Sugar - staying away from sweet stuff - even if it doesn't have lots of fat, it still may have lots of sugar = calories = weight gain.

My goal is to lose until I get back down to 200. Since I am 230 now, that should take til the end of next year, considering I am going to be adding muscle getting back to the gym.

Unfortunately, it took the death of another TBR member to make me take a good look at my unhealthy lifestyle. Considering what I have already been through, you'd think I would already have known better.

I've thought about the same things. I'm going to try and drop 10-15 lbs. and start going to the gym again. Hell, there is a full gym in my neighborhood that is never used...and I say I don't have time.

Also need to quit eating crap late at night when I'm hungry.

I have cut down on my frequency in regards to drinking, but I still go way overboard when I DO drink. Either I've got to cut that back or even drink even less frequently.

:bounce: Well ALRIGHT Silver! i hope you stick with it!

Pantherfanz death reminds me how fortunate my family was that my grandpa's heart attack didn't take him out of this world this past summer. He's been given another chance. I didn't want to say anything in his thread but i couldn't believe that dukey couldn't believe he had a heart attack. when we were at the hospital for my grandpa there were tons of people there in their 30's and alot of those were women too. They even had a dude 19.

Well done, Silver. IMHO, that is the absolute best way to honor PantherFanz' memory.

Just over a year ago, Reggie White's untimely death motivated me to get checked out and start treatment for sleep apnea. About 16 months later, I'm in better shape than I've been in 15 years.

It's tragic and frustrating that it takes such a blow to shake us out of our comfort zones, even though we know better. But it's even more tragic not to act on those blows.

I am always fighting an on again off again battle with my weight but I went to the gym yesterday for the first time in a couple of months. Pantherfanz helped motivate me to do it. My son is 21 months old the end of this month and I have another boy on the way. I need to do everything I can to make sure they have a dad while they grow up.

I have gone from 220 to 203 in the last year by just cutting out soft drinks. No other changes in my lifestyle. Wife is jealous though. She did the weight watchers thing and went from 128 to 110 eating crap.

I've got my blood pressure down, I've cut out a lot of foods. Basically anything that comes in a can & fastfood, is way high in sodium...including Subway food...processed lunch meat is loaded.

It's good to get a complete check up, with blood work & an EKG.
