Has Jake ever been questionable - or even on the injury list?

I say why not, doubt it will happen, but the team gets to look at Weinke all week, perhaps make some adjustments should JD not "be able to play".

You know JD will throw the game away somehow at a critical point, Weinke couldnt do much worse. If Weinke comes in and sucks, maybe JD replaces him at halftime and rekindles the glory.

Personally, I've said it numerous times, Jake is NOT the biggest of our problems. Fix the O-line, it will fix Jake. I am not a "Bench Delhomme" backer, however, if they do go with Weinke I am not going to get all pissy either.
Just don't see how Weinke would fair much better.

It's very hard to see him doing better. Scapegoating doesn't improve the other guy's performance.

If they bench him, that's fine. Weinke's the guy for the rest of the year and we'll have to go spend big on somebody else. But no, he's not the big problem.

I'm with McFly about Jake not being the biggest problem, but thinking about this "injury" for a couple minutes I've concluded this is a smart move by the team:

I don't doubt Jake has some pain in his thumb, but I'd be surprised if it was enough to keep him out of practice after a normal game. What's really hurt is Jake's confidence. Benching him overtly for Weinke wouldn't help that (and Jake IS the better of the two QBs), but then a bad outing against the Giants would probably be a double-whammy: Shattered confidence AND benched.

So what to do? Use the slight injury as the excuse to give Weinke reps and probably the start against NY, while Jake gets out of the line of fire for a week and hopefully recovers some of his mojo. If Weinke sucks, then Jake's thumb "gets better" and in he goes. If Weinke does well, then they can stick with the "hot hand" without having to officially demote Jake.
