Not sure it this belongs here but...

I was watching some show on Architecture of the Nazi's and a question crossed my mind.

Why, during WWII, etc., with Italy being occupied was the Vatican left pretty much alone? The wealth in the Vatican is huge it would seem Hitler would have wanted to take all that.

The Vatican is treated as seperate country and any attempts to have occupied it or taken its wealth would have lead to widespread problems for Hitler with his own people and with his Allies - especially Italy and France.

He already 'owned' Italy and France.

PR problems. Germany was still largely Christian during the Hitler years, despite the popularity of occutlism and occasional appeals to the heroic mythology of the country's ancient past. Like any good tyrant, Hitler knew the value of making sure everyone knew "Gott" was on his side. Remember that National Socialism hated atheist Communism worse than democracy. So the old saw about "my enemy's enemy" probably had a good bit to do with it.

No, Italy and Vichy were allies, and if they had caused problems he would have been in big, big trouble.

Plus, most of the Vatican's treasures are only worth something if you find somone else to buy them - which is going to be problematic at best.

Another good point. However they could melt down all that gold into ingots if they wanted.
