Heck if he hated left field in Washington why would he in Philly other than for 17 mil a year?

    From ESPN Insider

    Phil 'er up?
Nov 8 - According to the Philadelphia Daily News, the Phillies will try to sign Alfonso Soriano as right-handed protection for lefty slugger Ryan Howard. "He would be great for this team. He would be great for this city," new coach Davey Lopes told the newspaper. "He would be great in this ballpark."
Teams can begin bidding on free agents Nov. 12. To meet Soriano's demands -- expected to be $15 million to $17 million a year for a five- to seven-year deal -- the Phillies almost certainly would exceed their record $95.5 million payroll in 2005, especially if they cannot trade left fielder Pat Burrell or trade him and pay a sizable portion of his salary. Team president David Montgomery said last month the Phillies expect to remain between the $88 million spent last season and the 2005 mark.

    Phillies meet with Soriano
Nov 17 - Phillies GM Pat Gillick and two of his assistants met with free-agent slugger Alfonso Soriano and his representatives for about 20 minutes Thursday in Florida, The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.
"We indicated interest," a smiling Gillick told the newspaper. The next step? "Getting a response from them," Gillick added.

According to the newspaper, the Phillies would like to limit the deal to five or six years.

"They gave us some parameters," Gillick said. "Right now, we feel comfortable with the parameters."

The Phillies, however, will face some serious competition from a number of teams. The Astros, according to The Houston Chronicle, have already made a multiyear offer.

Low OBP and strikes out a lot, not exactly my idea of a 17 million dollar hitter.

Teams apparently have cash to spend out the ass. Frank Thomas got a 2 year near 20 million dollar deal.
