Until Cal Ripken's .340 in 1999, Bumbry held the single season BAVG record for the Orioles at .337 during his rookie year.

    vpkozel:
In Heyman's article for SI today he says that the Yankees get $5 million total for advertising, merchandizing, and broadcast monies from Matsui.

Thanks. Doesn't look like he pays for himself, but that's not peanuts either.

It's gonna be real interesting what happens with the broadcast rights in this area, IMO. Currently it's split evenly among all the teams, I wonder if the teams with big presence over there will try to get a bigger slice of the pie.

it's all really moot. the sox just annnounced a hike in the prices of their best seat (not including Monster seats). as long as they're playing well and competing for the playoffs, people will pay the price. this guy will increase their chances of reaching the postseason. when that happens, in comes a shitload more gate revenue. In that respect, Henry will be able to say he's covered the cost.

This would be in addition to all of that revenue because Fenway could double dip with the virtual ads too.

There is no real reason to keep pretending that there are ways for them to recoup the money. There isn't, but that obviously isn't the point anyway. The question isn't "how much can we make off of him?," it's "will he beat the Yankees?" If he does, they'll gladly lose tens of millions of dollars on him.

The one valid concern from my vantage point is that his arm has taken a ton of abuse. They don't have the same concepts of pitch counts there that we do here and he's had multiple instances of throwing 300+ pitches in bullpen sessions and he's regularly thrown 200+ on days before his starts.

nor is there a real reason to keep pretending it matters. and if you think the red sox are gonna "lose money," you're the one who's nuts.

They aren't doing this to make more money, no. But everyone knows that one of their secondary motivations is to tap into the Asian revenue stream and expand their overall presence there. I agree that their primary motivation is to win though.

    Couldn't agree more.
