The New York Yankees boosted their popularity in Asia with Japanese outfielder Hideki Matsui and Taiwanese pitcher Chien- Ming Wang. The Seattle Mariners did the same with Japan's Ichiro Suzuki.

Yankees and Mariners games are broadcast in Japan, and both teams have sold Japanese advertisements in their ballparks. Matsui and Ichiro are trailed by a dedicated group of Japanese reporters.

``It's fair to say that the Asian community has a love affair with Hideki and they show up to his games, and there are a number of sponsors in Japan whom we have here,'' said Yankees Chief Operating Officer Lonn Trost.

    Sponsors

Canon Inc., Sony Corp., FujiFilm Holdings Corp., all based in Tokyo, became Yankees sponsors after the team added Matsui, Trost said. He declined to say how much revenue can be traced to Matsui, adding that the Japanese All-Star helped lift the franchise's profile.

nothing dumb about it, but it's gonna depend on the length of the contract. Boras wants a short-term deal, 2-3 years so his cleint can hit the market sooner and get bigger bucks. If the sox concede to those wishes, they'll ask for, and get, an annual salary payout that's less than market value. If Boras concedes a longer deal, 4-5 years, he'll demand, and get, a greater annual salary.

I say Boras' leverage is less than what he'd usually have because he has to get a deal done. I don't care that this guy can become a free agent after next season. If he has to go back to Japan and play a year, he'll be plenty pissed at Boras. and there's pressure on D-Jap to sign because the fans of the Seibu Hamslappers are probably plenty pissed at him already.

any idea if the Yankees make any money off games being broadcast via the YES network in Japan/Taiwan? If so, it would seem the sox could do the same with NESN.

I agree, because normally he can use one team against another. But he's still in a stronger position than the Red Sox because he can just wait and then have that open market in the future. Boston only has exclusive negotiating rights for 30 days, although it is in the best interests of both parties to get something done. I'm just saying that if you think you're getting him for less than $10 million a year, you're out of your mind, and it will probably take several million more than that. Who knows, he might be worth it.

None of this really matters anyway. They all should just save their money since the Mets will win the World Series next year. Its a foregone conclusion. Its fact.

I am out of my mind, but that's beside the point. I never said he'd sign for less than $10 million. I did throw out the $12 million figure and still think that's doable, if the sox have to agree to a shorter term deal. and I've heard more than one talking head say Suppan stands to get more than that. Millwood got it and, after the postseason he had, Suppan oughtta be worth at least as much as Kevin Freakin' Millwood.

I know there's been inflation over the last few years, but didn't Seattle initially sign Ichiro for less than $4 mill per over four years?

Just think what Cleon Jones would get in today's market.

I don't know. I know his posting fee was only $14 million, but don't recall the terms of his first contract.

his first contract was $14 million, but it was for only three years. still, less than $5 mill a year is a huge bargain. It's not like he was an unknown commodity.

edit: posting bid was $13 mill

But he was the first position player to ever make the jump, correct?
