Per Lou Stenson's College Football Report:

Officials at Auburn are privately lobbying against a New Year's Day Fiesta Bowl matchup with Boise State, saying they'd prefer a Jan. 2 Orange Bowl game against probable ACC champ Georgia Tech. Auburn reportedly is under pressure from the Southeastern Conference to do whatever it can to avoid the embarrassment of losing to a WAC team on national television and would prefer the Tigers take their beating at the hands of the ACC's top team. The logic is that the ACC is perceived, albeit incorrectly, as being superior to the WAC and a loss to Tech could be swallowed a bit more easily. Boise State will instead take on Texas in the Fiesta.

In other news, Alabama's loss to Mississippi State indicates the Tide may have thrown in the towel on the 2006 season, most likely in order to avoid a potential Motor City Bowl matchup with Central Michigan.

Alabama will most likely finish at 6-6 and decline a bowl bid this year. Stenson is right

I'd love to see Auburn roll Boise...but they would be screwed if they had to play them. A BCS birth should help you with recognition...recruiting. If Auburn played Boise the viewing audience would be pretty weak...

6-6 is pathetic to let a team go to a bowl. Since they're making them play 12 now, they ought to make it 7-5 at least. 8-4 is more like it in my book. Going to a bowl at 6-6 is like getting an award for making a C in a class. Unreal.

Totally agree. Although I doubt even the mighty Crimson Tide would turn down a bowl bid. It allows your team to keep practicing way beyond the end of the season.

What I don't understand is why so many bowls keep popping up. 1/2 the things look empty on TV...
