'hours' is a killer tv on the radio song.. there is definitely a 'black rock' feel to this music..... if living colour is any indication. that may not hold up long term

BTW, that Mew song is The Zookeeper's Boy. I've been listening to it a lot lately.

I have tried to get into Ray LaMontagne for a couple of years, and it hasn't taken. His new album is not supposed to be as good as his last either. Devendra Banhart is too pretentious, in a Sufjan Stevens way, rather than Conor Oberst.

The Midlake album (Trials of Van Occupanther) seems on the verge of being intentionally quirky as a gimmick. I'm not crazy about the vocals, they're too plain. The music isn't that bad though. Kinda similar to how I feel about Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - they've a fantastic band with a lead singer so bad that he sounds like David Byrne hitting puberty, although the mix of In This Home On Ice manages to wash him out in favor of some absolutely kickass instrumentation.

How about some bands that I'm *not* digging, that are supposed to be "it":

The Hold Steady - 100% attitude, even some decent cynical lyrics here and there, but the music isnt up to par, and the lead singer wishes he was Mike Ness, but he's not even close. He sounds like that tool from Sponge (Vinnie Dombroski?). They're not awful, but Im not buying that album or their hype.

Brakes - oh good god the album's not even out yet and they're the "greatest ever" according to the american indie and british press (a sure sign of crappiness). I listened. Sounds like a shitty garage band. Awful.

The Thermals - the lead singer cannot sing. The songs are repetitive. Not bad, but not great either. I cant bring myself to download them but I dont change the station either.

Phoenix - that long distance call song annoys me

The Long Winters - see the Thermals comment, except the singer's voice isnt bad, so I'll probably download their single.
